Responsibilities and daily life

Our Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) provide support for our production platforms.  In this role, you will provide day to day management, prioritization and escalation guidance to this team of engineers.  As an SRE manager you will:

  • Set the strategy and roadmap for the team, working in conjunction with Engineering Leadership
  • Accountable for delivery of team projects and progress reporting
  • Prioritize the team’s overall backlog to align with engineering objectives
  • Mentor and coach team members
  • Represent SRE in the Engineering community
  • Provide guidance to Engineering teams on operational best practices: security, stability, supportability, scalability

Skills and experiences

This position represents an excellent opportunity for a senior engineer to step into managing a team, or for an existing manager to take on the challenges of a fast-growing technical team in a fast-growing company.

Managing the Site Reliability Engineers requires an understanding of the impact and dependencies of their work.  We expect to take some time to familiarize you with our environment, so experience with our exact types of technology is not essential.  However, the following describes some required background:

  • Experience operating a service in a production environment is essential
  • Experience working with DevOps teams
  • You must be a strong communicator at multiple levels – the ability to break down technical concepts and communicate to executives in a way that makes sense, as well as the ability to communicate technical details to engineering teams
  • Experience planning work, managing priorities, and negotiating tradeoffs is required
  • Experience mentoring engineers is desirable
  • Experience working with Linux systems is desirable

To us, an SRE manager is someone with at least 3 years of experience managing technical teams, or 7+ years of experience in a senior engineering role.  However, we know that not all years are equal, and we are happy to consider people with different histories.
