THE OPPORTUNITY

We are hiring a Backend Tech Lead for our CODE team!

Our main goal in CODE is to make wellbeing universal. From knowing about Gympass, getting access to exclusive benefits, to using our vast partner's network, it is in the end-user experience. CODE is an acronym for Consumer Digital Experience, which means we're in charge of the experience and services that will guide people into their wellbeing journey.

Our teams are responsible for Martech, Access, Activation and Retention, Search, Partners usage, and Mobile Excellence. We develop and maintain Gympass's App, frontend and backend services, Design System and work closely with product, UX, and data teams to create an excellent experience for the users of our platform.

YOUR IMPACT

As a Tech Lead, you will be responsible for overseeing a team of software engineers ensuring the pace and quality of its technical deliveries. You must be seen as a technical reference by your team and should expect to code some key features, perform pull-requests reviews, and actively take part in all the architectural decisions of the squad.

You will collaborate closely with the Product Manager to evaluate the feasibility of tasks, choose the best strategy for assigning and splitting user stories and prioritize engineering issues and technical debts. You need to ensure that agile ceremonies run effectively and watch for any process bottlenecks. 

You are also expected to have a sharp strategic mindset questioning the product manager about the scope and timing of features balancing the complexity and the cost of opportunity of deliveries.

You are a data-driven person who asks for data to support product decisions before blindly implementing things. Besides that, you follow up on the engineering KPIs for the journey you will be responsible for.

In addition, you're expected to perform management tasks such as mentoring, facilitating, and conducting regular one-on-ones with your team members, making sure that they are constantly challenged, engaged, and improving their skills. You should assess their performance regularly and draw the best plan for their career.

In short, you are accountable for what the squad delivers in both quality and quantity aspects.
The squad outcome is your outcome.

Responsibilities

  • Define the architecture of systems, making sure design docs are up to date
  • Develop, including pair programming, parts of the system (expected around 30%)
  • Account for systems reliability, scalability, SLA, and SLO
  • Manage technical debts and engineering backlog
  • Ensure a high bar on code quality standards, making sure devs are proud of their work
  • Spread development best practices such as code reviews, pair programming, TDD, etc
  • Take part in incident resolution and troubleshooting in the production
  • Manage an engineering squad performing activities such as conducting one on ones, generating individual development plans and performance improvement plans
  • Run agile ceremonies in collaboration with a product manager, making sure the best delivery strategy is chosen
  • Follow up engineering and product KPIs

 WHO YOU ARE

We expect you to have the following qualifications:

  • Experience designing and developing complex modern web applications
  • Experience in developing RESTful web services collaborating with front end teams to create mocks, define payloads, and HTTP status of APIs
  • Experience with at least two different programming languages such as Go, Scala, Kotlin, or Java
  • Experience with SQL/NoSQL technology such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, DynamoDB, understanding common use cases and performanced pitfalls
  • Experience dealing with event-driven architectures and message brokers such as RabbitMQ, KAFKA, ActiveMQ, etc., and an in-depth understanding of their use cases and pitfalls
  • Experience in implementing prototypes and in practices and concepts such as MVP, A/B testing, and feature toggles for rolling-out features to production
  • Experience applying computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithm design, problem-solving, and complexity analysis.
  • Experience with monitoring, observability, and KPIs tracking
  • Experience with microservices and high volume distributed systems
  • Experience with Cloud-based architectures in the AWS
  • Strong communication skills, including verbal and written English and Portuguese
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline or equivalent practical experience

The following would be considered a plus:

  • Experience with System Integrations
  • Experience with Atlassian tools (JIRA and Confluence)
  • Experience in our Tech Stack in general
