The opportunity 

Reporting directly into the Chief Product and Technology Officer the VP Platform Engineering is a key role within the product development leadership team. It is the most senior technology leadership role within the company, acting as the right hand for the CPTO when it comes to technical matters. You will lead a team of talented DevOps-, Software-, Site Reliability- and QA Engineers working on foundational technology and product capabilities leveraged by our various product- and delivery teams. The main focus is on topics reducing cognitive load of stream-aligned teams in order for them to focus on delivering customer value efficiently. This includes many cross-cutting technology aspects spanning horizontally across teams incl. cloud strategy & tooling, developers UX, CI/CD, test automation and our architecture/platform vision. In addition, together with Platform Tribe Product Leader, you and your team will own several core product capabilities incl. payment gateways, financial system integrations or invoicing and billing. 

The role requires strong collaboration and influencing skills as well as a service and enabling mindset. The role is not about sitting in an ivory tower and telling others how software development works but rather helping, enabling and supporting others to do their job more efficiently.

Your responsibilities 

Strategy

  • Develop, communicate and execute our platform vision and strategy
  • Partner with CPTO to translate product and engineering strategy to a clear and actionable platform engineering roadmap, objectives, and key results and frequently communicate strategy to the engineering team
  • Lead, attract and retain a passionate team of engineers and engineering leaders
  • Lead our production engineering team working on infrastructure, CI/CD, developer UX and operational tooling
  • Empower engineers to accomplish technical projects that improve total product or platform health, while simultaneously balancing strategic product and platform engineering priorities

Results

  • Consolidate our tech stack towards a more unified tool set
  • Lead cross-cutting, horizontal architecture topics spanning across teams
  • Lead our QA and security efforts
  • Develop a plan on how to decompose and modernise our monolithic application together with the team
  • Work closely with all the engineering and product leaders to ensure Urban Sports Club OKRs are delivered efficiently and effectively
  • Improve the engineering team’s capacity and capability to deliver by monitoring performance and execution, identifying inefficiencies, eliminating blockers, and working to improve them with managers
  • Help other individuals and teams to be successful
  • Collaborate with senior product and engineering managers on project planning, dependency management, risk management and continuous process improvement for an optimal flow of value for customers and the business (with an appropriate use of metrics).

What you need to succeed 

  • 6+ years experience in a similar engineering leadership role
  • Ability to lead, grow and inspire engineering leaders as well senior and junior engineers
  • Experience with cloud native architectures in AWS or GCP
  • Experience in building easy to use deployment pipelines and CI/CD systems
  • Strong know-how with containers and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience in decomposing monolithic applications to microservices
  • Advocacy of DevOps culture and mindset
  • Experience building, scaling, and operating high performing, high traffic web applications
  • Data informed, KPI driven and a strong focus on achieving outcomes and delivering value
  • Expert in designing and building distributed systems and systems integrations based on synchronous and asynchronous (messaging-based) communication patterns
