Business Director


We’re looking for a Business Director to join our fast-growing team in London. This is a true #2 role, tied at the hip with our Managing Director to execute our aggressive, ambitious vision for growth in EMEA. This role will wear many hats - supporting account leads in managing key accounts, developing and strengthening the entire account department, developing and implementing an operational strategy to support scale and efficiency within the business, finding and realizing growth opportunities through smart, savvy new business development, and being a core piece of the leadership team in London. We’re looking for someone who has operated in a leadership role for an agency at scale, but loves the idea of joining a start-up and building something from scratch. We’re looking for someone who believes or has shown they have CEO material and DNA - someone who wants to be on a fast track with one of the fastest growing independent agencies to help us shake up the industry in this part of the world.


  • The Business Director is an individual with robust experience in marketing and media on the agency and/or brand side.  This individual is expected to possess a specialty in VaynerMedia’s ever-evolving areas of expertise and exploration, which include but are not limited to Brand Strategy, Creative, Digital Expertise, Paid Media, E-commerce, and SMART technologies
    • The BD works across a pod consisting of multiple portfolios. A portfolio may consist of multiple brands or one master brand that has multiple lines of business
      • As a result, the BD needs to have had years of responsibility for multiple teams at once and can point to examples of individual team members professional development under their supervision
  • Needs to be or become an expert in the industries represented in their pod in order to act as business partners to clients and help them identify opportunities for their business that they may not have seen themselves
    • Partners with the Group Creative DIrector of their pod to ensure each portfolios is delivering the best possible work in the most efficient ways possible (Lowest Cost and Fastest Delivery)
      • The pair is responsible for evaluating processes/ways of working on an ongoing basis with a constant goal of applying learning, improving and innovating
    • Directly supervises a group of Account Directors each of which oversee a portfolio of brands/business lines
    • Given the breadth of work happening in a pod, the BD needs to be capable of having a significant positive impact in business situations with the lowest number of touches and has a proven reputation for thought leadership and mentorship
      • Helps to scale AD’s during busy periods when there may be the need for a senior presence or support on multiple brands at the same time
    • Has a long track record of success in generating new business and wIll lead new client opportunities that are self identified or assigned by the agency Executive Team
  • The Account Development Team is responsible for Client Relationship Management, Internal Workflows, Business Operations and Business Development
    • The BD is directly responsible for management of Senior-most Client Relationships (Often C-suite level but depends on client org structure) and identification of opportunities for growth with existing clients
    • Manages multi-million pound budgets and oversees business health, resourcing, and revenue realization across all brands/clients in pod
      • Approves annual retainer budgets and scopes of work prior to agency finance department approval and subsequent submission to client lead for approval
      • Approves Account Development team promotions within their pod
  • Responsible for People Development and Management across the various disciplines reflected in their pod
    • Initiates opportunities for intra-agency and intra-pod connections as well as education and professional development at a group level
    • In consultation with People & Experiences team, executes annual reviews and personalized development plans for all AD’s they supervise
    • Ensures reviews and development conversations for all Account Development team members are conducted in timely and consistent manner
    • May contribute to reviews of other agency members with whom they’ve worked closely in a given year
  • Outside of the Pod structure and agency Executive Team, the BD maintains relationships with the fellow business leads in the US, VPs of Strategy, Paid Media, Analytics and Integrated Production and the Directors of Partnership, E-commerce and SMART technology in order to
    • Keep pulse of overarching agency priorities and capabilities that should be shared across their pod
    • Acquire learnings from other Pods that may spark opportunities with their own clients or enhance work within their own pod
  • Communicates directly into the executive team, providing key updates on their brands, engaging senior leadership as needed to support teams within VM or client initiatives.
