Software Engineer

Job Description Summary

TripAdvisor is the largest travel site in the world, visited by over 455 million travellers each month.

The Reykjavik office of the Attractions group is looking for software engineers to join our fast-growing team.

We’re responsible for the entirety of the marketplace: suppliers, owners, travellers, finance and customer support. We build and maintain the underlying systems that power the common supply platform as well as all of the points of sale and customer service tools.

We have a fun and friendly environment where the key objective is getting things done. Our engineers are part of the full process from design, to code, to test, to deployment and back again for further iteration.

Across TripAdvisor, we’ve worked hard to create an atmosphere of “Speed Wins” – minimising process, shipping products quickly and doing everything to avoid big company paralysis. This is a very bottom-up organisation; there are no software architects thinking deep thoughts and directing the action from above. We trust our engineers to come up with, implement and take responsibility for their own designs.

Do you like building features end to end? Do you like working with a large number of technologies? Do you like moving quickly, releasing features daily, working with other smart and talented engineers? If this sounds like you, we’d love to talk to you.

What you will do

You will work in a team environment in the design and implementation of our web products. We are looking for a self-starter who is excited to learn and improve his or her skillset in the ever-evolving medium of the web. The ideal candidate is a creative thinker with experience in user experience definition and user interface design & implementation.

You will code! Most of our engineers release code to production every few days as we release small and often.
Help shape the future front-end architecture behind a rapidly-growing business
Develop and test across multiple browsers, platforms, and devices, including smartphones and tablets.
Support the wider Engineering team with front-end expertise

What we’re looking for

  • Solid understanding of front-end technologies and frameworks – React, Webpack
  • Experience of Javascript unit testing with Jest (or similar)
  • Background of building applications with a mobile-first focus
  • Familiarity with the latest ES6 and HTML5 standards
  • Knowledge of CSS preprocessors such as SASS and LESS
  • Computer Science degree or equivalent experience.
  • Deep understanding of a first-class object-oriented language such as Java or C#.
  • Willingness and ability to take on new technologies. You don’t need to have experience with everything listed above but you do need to be hungry to learn.
  • Ability to break down complex problems into simple solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills and desire to write clean, correct and efficient code.
  • High quality verbal and written communication skills.
  • Sense of ownership, urgency and pride in your work
