THE OPPORTUNITY

We are hiring a Staff Backend Software Engineer for our GenAI team in Portugal!

Our GenAI team leverages advanced AI technologies to personalize user experiences, streamline operations, and optimize resources, acting as a hub for innovation while enabling Wellhub to harness the full potential of generative AI across multiple domains.

We are looking for a passionate and skilledStaff Software Engineer to join our team and help us build the next generation of AI-powered solutions. This role focuses on generative AI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) + LLMs fine tuning, and API integrations. Talented lead software engineers of any area who would like to shift their career to invest in AI are welcome to apply if they are a match to some of the qualifications and preferred qualifications listed below. YOUR IMPACT

  • Generative AI Development:
    • Design, develop, and implement generative AI based applications.
    • Work with large language models (LLMs) to create innovative applications and solutions.
    • Conduct research to stay updated with the latest advancements in generative AI.
  • Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG):
    • Develop and optimize RAG systems to enhance the performance and accuracy of AI models.
    • Implement robust data retrieval mechanisms to support RAG frameworks.
    • Collaborate with data engineers to ensure seamless integration of data pipelines.
  • API Development and Integration:
    • Design and develop APIs to interface with various AI models and services.
    • Ensure APIs are secure, scalable, and performant.
    • Ensure seamless integration of our AI applications with other software systems, enhancing interoperability and functionality (e.g., WhatsApp, Slack, Teams, Google Chat, and other 3rd party mobile applications).

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, and other engineers.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers.
  • Communicate technical concepts and project progress effectively to non-technical stakeholders.

Leadership:

  • Drive critical projects from the architectural design to implementation.
  • Plan and successfully deliver cross team projects.
  • Provide estimates on efforts and risks, evaluating technical feasibility on cross-functional high-impact projects.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field;
  • Strong experience in programming languages such as Python, Go, Java, C or C++;
  • Experienced in working with SQL/NoSQL technologies (e.g., OpenSearch, DynamoDB, PostgreSQL) understanding common use cases and performance pitfalls;
  • Experience with API development and integration;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail;
  • Able to work efficiently on high scalable and distributed projects;
  • Proven experience with projects where the scope is not clearly defined;
  • Faster learner, easily adapting to new technologies quickly and efficiently;
  • Passionate and proven experience to build reliable minimum viable products and pilots in a short amount of time;
  • Experience working with modern agile product development teams;
  • Keen on helping your team to collaborate within and with other teams;
  • Lead by example and seen by others as an inspiring technical leader;
  • Strong communication (both in English and Portuguese), teamwork and leadership skills.

The following are preferred qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field;
  • Proven experience with one or more topics listed in the Responsibilities section;
  • Familiarity with large language models, generative AI frameworks (e.g., Haystack, Langchain, LlamaIndex, HuggingFace, Ollama, AWS Bedrock);
  • Knowledge of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and related technologies;
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure);
  • Knowledge of data engineering and ETL processes (e.g., Spark, Flink);
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks and libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch);
  • Understanding of natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision;
  • Experience with Kubernetes for containerization and orchestration.
