EnglishScore 

EnglishScore is a brand new EdTech venture in partnership with the British Council.  At its core is a free mobile English test that will help millions of people to unlock the potential that the English language gives them.  What we are building could have a tangibly positive impact on the lives of millions of people.  This isn’t just another techie gig.

Our service is launched at scale in India, and soft launched elsewhere around the globe.  Our first offering is focussed on testing candidates’ skills around grammar, vocabulary, reading, and listening.  Next up is speaking: we need to build real-time voice recognition and correction into our assessment, for any person with any accent anywhere on the planet.

Our technological stack is pretty open right now.  We have our Android app authored in Java, a prototype iOS app authored in Swift, and a very conventional light backend written in Python.  Our infrastructure is running on Google Cloud Platform.  We are early stage enough that nothing is set in stone, so anyone can make a case for using any technology they think would help us reach our goals more effectively.

Like all the other tech startups on the planet, we think that machine learning is going to play a fundamental part in our future.  We generate a lot of data, so data science is something we dedicate a lot of time to.

Who Are You?

First and foremost, you’re a mobile specialist.  You’ve launched real apps, with large user bases, which you’ve maintained and iterated.  You’ve made mistakes but you’ve learned from them.  Mobile is your thing, and while you’re excited about things like React Native you recognise that there are also benefits to thinking and building natively.

You’ve collaborated using some of the best industry practices around agile development, and know how to speak UI/UX with designers and how to extract requirements from stakeholders.

You have knowledge of iOS (Swift) or Android (Java/Kotlin).  If you’re comfortable with both, even if one is much stronger than the other, that’s great.  If you don’t know both, it would be nice if you had an interest in learning both because you feel as we do that we should always keep learning and expanding our abilities.
