Twilio's customers send millions of communications every day. These communications are a firehose of micro-transactions, processed at a fraction of a penny at a time, millions of events per second.  As a pay-as-you-go service, it's critical to both external and internal customers that we bill transactions in a timely and accurate manner. As a shared platform within Twilio, we have a responsibility to ensure that our systems can quickly and easily scale to support new products, 3rd-party integrations and new use-cases. 

This role will be working with high scale, high availability systems dealing with billing events, Invoices, Taxes and other related items. This role will be leading/mentoring the next generation of technical leaders in the team. This role will be spending some of your time infusing your technical expertise and know how in your team through code reviews and white boarding sessions while other 60% of time hands-on coding.


  • 5+ years of experience in architecting, designing and writing platform software management of high throughput distributed data platform. Our scale is in real time processing of several billion events. Yup !!  
  • Strong Experience in design, implement, and maintain data infrastructure services, like Kafka, Unified Logging services, Redis, Casandra etc.
  • Strong experience with NoSQL and SQL databases
  • Strong JVM languages and python expertise with a focus on writing scalable , secure and highly available software applications. Bonus - We love Scala, would be great to have experience in Scala as well. 
  • Excellent problem solving, critical thinking, and communication skills 
  • Experience automating CI/CD pipelines. 
  • Expertise in configuration management for deploying, configuring, and managing servers and system


As a Senior Software Engineer:

  • Should be able to adapt at prioritizing multiple issues in a high pressure environment 
  • Should be able to understand complex architectures and be comfortable working with multiple teams 
  • Ability to conduct performance analysis, capacity management and troubleshoot large scale distributed systems 
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced environment while continuously evaluating emerging technologies while mentoring junior engineers 
  • The position requires knowledge of with open source technologies.


As a senior member of Billing Platform team you will have direct impact on Twilio’s revenue. You will play a pivotal role in architecting and implementing systems aggregating usage across Twilio; applying taxes and generating Invoices for the usage.
