The Company

SPAN invented the smart electric panel. We transformed a century-old appliance into an intelligent device that can sense and control the sources and uses of electricity in your home. This makes going solar simpler, adding battery-based backup more valuable, gas appliances dispensable, EV fast-charging possible, appliance breakdowns preventable and generally makes people care about the energy that powers their home.

SPAN was founded by Tesla’s former head of energy products, the team that created and deployed the Tesla Powerwall, the world’s first mass-market and still most popular home battery.

The Role

SPAN is seeking a customer obsessed execution focused Director of Product to lead device software, digital services, and customer experience. You’ll play a critical role in shaping the product organization and roadmap by defining the product direction, execution, and product lifecycle. You will dive deep into the current product capabilities to inform a vision and execution for future product roadmap, driving successful product launches enabled by our hardware platform and delightful customer experience. You will bring a rigor in working backwards from the customer, leveraging research, discovery, and honed intuition.

Reporting to SPAN’s Head of Product, you'll ensure harmony across our product ecosystem by collaborating closely with the heads of Hardware products, Platform products, and Installer experience. Your role will be crucial in refining and defining a scalable software architecture across multiple hardware products, leveraging discovery and design practices, and maintaining UX excellence throughout the digital portfolio. You will champion user-centric design and product strategies, demonstrating how to prototype and iterate quickly while holding a high bar for quality, and delivering software-enabled features that bring cost savings, convenience, comfort, and carbon-reduction to homes equipped with a SPAN Panel.

Transforming the user's perception of electricity will be at the heart of your role. You'll turn an intricate, unseen concept into personalized insights, automations, and actions that resonate with homeowners' energy sources, uses, and costs. By overseeing the ongoing development of our Homeowner App and shaping the way consumers interact with and think about energy, you will play a pivotal role in redefining the energy narrative in their homes.

About You

Responsibilities

  1. Immerse yourself and the team in the needs of SPAN homeowners, channeling their desires for savings, convenience and better living into our consumer digital product strategy.

  2. Take ownership of the strategy, roadmap, and execution, in continuous alignment with counterpart product teams and overall business goals.

  3. Rapidly develop, iterate, and deliver products and features, maintaining a balance between production delivery, upcoming product/feature design, and new product/feature discovery.

  4. Champion a metrics-driven approach to prioritization and iteration, using engagement analytics to guide decision making.

  5. Maintain proficiency in 80% of our tech stack - native mobile and web apps, voice assistants, APIs, cloud back-end, data models, device firmware, control - and show eagerness to learn the remaining 20%.

  6. Foster an environment that supports complex, non-linear thinking to create unprecedented products and features, being unafraid to experiment with mental models beyond the energy industry.

We are looking for a leader who

  • Thinks critically. Can navigate through ambiguity, defend their point of view, and adopt a holistic yet pragmatic approach to problem-solving.

  • Inquires expertly. Asks high-quality questions to uncover underlying needs not just stated wants, and thinks about future scenarios to inform present decisions.

  • Communicates effectively. Can articulate product ideas and value propositions in a way that resonates with a diverse range of stakeholders.

  • Works collaboratively. Acts as a bridge between product, engineering, and business teams, viewing project management as a critical component of product success.

  • Understands technically. Is not hesitant to become intimately familiar with our product and back-end platform, advocating for architectural approaches that serve our users best.

  • Serves gladly. Enjoys being the go-to person, resolving issues, answering queries, and serving others willingly.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven leadership overseeing HW and SW Product teams.

  • Track record of shipping 0-to-1 consumer devices and digital products/features

  • Experience with personalized and journey-based experiences

  • Strong working knowledge of discovery techniques, design sprints, and rapid prototyping

  • Hands-on experience with product analytics tools, feature flagging services and in-app messaging systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive project execution.

  • Experience in the residential energy sector (home solar and storage systems, utility programs and rate structures)

  • Experience with connected home/IoT products (connected devices, smart appliances, assistants)

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
