About the Role:

As our business grows and the needs of our workforce become more complex, it’s vital we continue to evolve our approach to Environment; iterating on how we curate in-person and digital experiences to enable successful business results and maximize inclusion + equity outcomes. This leader will be a key partner to the Head of People and work closely with the Head of Gusto and other organizational leaders on Talent Strategy, Real Estate and facilities related project/program initiatives. This role is an opportunity to be a true leader in our organization, with a high level of responsibility as well the full support of our executive team. The position is full-time and based in San Francisco or Denver.

About the Team:

The Environment Team at Gusto creates delightful workplace experiences in each of our four homebase office locations in Denver, San Francisco, Scottsdale and New York City; and our other flex work spaces, through ownership of our Facilities, Offices, Real Estate, and Security strategies. The bespoke experience employees have in each of our offices supports them to thrive at work to make a positive impact for our customers. The Environment Team partners closely with our Community and Inclusion Team, IT Team, Finance and a variety of other cross-functional teams to build the best employee experience possible.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Lead, coach, and motivate a distributed team of workplace professionals to realize Gusto’s vision and contribute to successful business outcomes.
  • Create and execute a forward-thinking, data-driven workplace strategy focused on enabling the success of individuals and teams in a distributed work environment.
  • Deliver new construction and retrofitting projects in partnership with Real Estate and Construction vendors and partners.
  • Implement new global standards and vendor agreements to drive efficiency and ensure a consistent level of service across our global footprint. Negotiate contracts and manage relationships with third-party vendors to determine service-level agreements and performance metrics that drive high quality and timely delivery of their services and products.
  • Partner with our Community & Inclusion Team to coordinate and maximize our events strategy; ranging from showcases put on by our Affinity Groups (AG) to supporting team onsites and quarterly planning meetings.
  • Oversee and improve facilities management initiatives to optimize resources and maintain a safe, efficient, and high-touch workplace environment. 
  • Collaborate with local leaders in each of our offices to gather feedback on our workplace experience, understand specific needs, and tailor local and global workplace strategies accordingly.
  • Develop strategies to drive office utilization and employee satisfaction at a global scale, empowering your team to own local culture in the office(s) they manage.
  • Manage the Workplace Experience team budget, implementing tools to effectively track and efficiently allocate resources to maximize the impact of global and local workplace initiatives.
  • Be a key partner to the business and other internal organizations including Legal, Finance, Information Technology (IT), etc.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 10+ years’ combined experience in workplace services, employee experience and/or employee engagement work.
  • 5+ years in people management - with a skill for motivating and mentoring talent to do the best work of their careers. 
  • Has led office buildouts in multiple geographies with proven track record managing a global, diverse office footprint of >500k sqft, and delivered on time and on budget.
  • Proven track record of building out space inclusive of customer experience operations, large-scale training, and flexible work spaces.
  • Extensive experience designing and implementing data-driven workplace strategies that grow and evolve with the needs of the business and employees.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and is able to work cross-functionally with stakeholders to find the right questions as well as the right answers.
  • Committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace environment, with strong knowledge of workplace standards, ADA accommodations, and inclusive design.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is between $166,000 - $206,00/year in Denver, between $195,000 - $241,000/year for San Francisco. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.


Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. 

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
