We are seeking an experienced Product Counsel to join our Strategic Transactions and Financial Technologies, Legal team to support Gusto, focused on our consumer financial product offerings.

About the Role

This role will be based in any of our home base offices, San Francisco, New York City, or Denver, Colorado, or remote.  This individual will support and grow our mission to create a world where work empowers a better life and to build inclusive workplaces with responsible financial benefits for employees.

In the role you'll work closely with our Engineering, Product, Design, Business and Operations teams to provide guided advice and direction about the applicability of consumer financial laws, such as TILA, TISA, FDCPA, FCRA, ECOA, UDAAP, EFTA, BSA, and relevant state equivalents and payments laws, network rules and payment facilitator business models. Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Navigate complex product and regulatory frameworks to design and mature innovative financial products and services.
  • Identify and advise on risks arising from payments and other financial services regulatory regimes and provide practical solutions to address risks identified and business needs.
  • Counsel the product, engineering, and design teams on a range of issues including financial services, privacy, and consumer protection.
  • Structure, draft, negotiate and advise upon various financial services complex transactions with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Work closely with our Compliance team to manage multiple financial services products, including monitoring, training, policies and procedures, risk assessments, and third-party audits.
  • Collaborate with our Operations and Engineering, Product, and Design teams to mature our processes, controls, and documentation as needed to align with new or revised laws, rules, or regulations.
  • Research and respond to internal stakeholders on complex product and regulatory issues.
  • Look around corners and creatively solve problems for the business as they plan, build, and execute on their product roadmap.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • JD degree with 5+ years of combined relevant legal experience in a law firm and/or an in-house legal department of a regulated financial institution or financial technology company
  • Familiarity with state and federal consumer financial, lending, and payments laws
  • Active license to practice law in California or New York, or ability to register in-house
  • Experience advising on financial products, including mobile apps
  • Experience negotiating and drafting strategic agreements for financial services
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow through in a fast-paced environment
  • A self-starter with team player mindset (no job is too big or too small)
  • A collaborative approach and demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, cross-functionally, and independently.  

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $152,000 to $181,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $185,000 to $212,000 for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
