Censys knows the internet and cloud better than anyone else. Our daily IPv4 scans alongside the world’s largest SSL/TLS Certificate database enables customers with the most accurate and continuously updated map of the internet at any given moment in time. Enterprise security teams leverage Censys to keep pace with the speed of their business and gain an advantage on the rapidly evolving cyber-attack threats. Censys has two main product lines:

  • Censys Search provides users with the best view of all publicly facing internet and cloud services to extend visibility, awareness, and create the most complete map of the internet available. 
  • The Attack Surface Management platform provides customers with an attacker-centric view of all externally facing internet and cloud to extend visibility, prioritize, and remediate the most critical risk exposures that will actually lead to a breach. 

Our platform serves millions of requests per day and is growing rapidly. We are looking for a Director of Engineering to join our team to assist in building our next-generation platform to provide a single interface and tech-stack for our main products, allowing users to interact with Censys data in new and exciting ways. Censys operates the best-in-class Internet-wide scanning, bulk DNS resolution, and X.509 certificate ingestion: your job will be to lead the teams building the web application experiences, workflows, and features to allow users to explore and gain insight from Censys data. We’re looking for a hands-on leader who will ensure the application is architected in a scalable way, and work across Product, UX, and Engineering to ensure features are well-planned and executed.

What you will do:

  • Lead teams that build and maintain our web application and middle-tier services that are built on top of our Internet Map
  • Understand the mission of the business and how your organization fits into the bigger picture
  • Work with a cross-functional team (dev, docs, UX, scrum master) to deliver high-quality complete solutions to customers
  • Set and maintain a high bar for hiring new talent
  • Continually inspect our process and culture looking for areas to improve
  • Drive technical projects and provide leadership in an innovative and fast-paced environment
  • Take responsibility for the overall planning, execution, and success of complex technical projects, including everything from research to design through development and on-time delivery of product releases to customers. 
  • Work closely with the Product Management team to ensure we're building the best products
  • Be the bias towards action in the room. It's easy to get lost in trying to build the perfect system, tackle too much at once, or fall back into waterfall-style habits. You will continually show co-workers that staying customer-focused and iterative will lead to the best results
  • Be responsible for the quality of your organization's work

  • Think management sits between engineering and the business
  • Think engineering’s job is done after the code is written
  • You think Product needs to have a long detailed PRD that can be handed over to engineering and worked on for an extended period
  • You aren’t willing to push your team harder to think about building systems that work at any scale

What you will bring:

  • BS, preferably in the field of CS
  • 5+ years experience in leading a team or multiple teams of software developers
  • 10+ years experience in software engineering
  • Understanding of common Internet infrastructure such as DNS, IP WHOIS, routing, and load-balancing technologies
  • Experience leading software engineering teams with a history of delivering high-quality SaaS applications developed on cloud computing infrastructure (preferably GCP)
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and you can communicate about both strategic and technical issues to cross-functional audiences
  • History of Scaling team productivity through delegation
  • You are a force multiplier to your teams by providing them with effective professional development plans
  • Full understanding of the SDLC and how to hold teammates accountable for delivering quality customer experiences

Our target salary range for this role is between $214,000 USD and $275,000 USD + bonus eligibility and equity.
