The Role:
In the DevEx (Developer Experience) team, we are responsible for creating tools and practices that improve developers’ lives in terms of productivity, focus and ease of use of our internal platforms. DevEx and Platform Engineering is a relatively new branch globally and in AlphaSense, so there is a lot of green field development and research to be done and a real chance at majorly affecting our engineering culture and bringing a lot of positive changes to the entire company. Our main focus at the moment is on improving Software Delivery tools and processes.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Software Engineer to help us in this endeavor. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of software development and delivery cycle, is excited about making internal tools to improve lives of fellow developers, and passionate about creating high-quality easy-to-use software themselves.
As part of the DevEx team, you will also be partnering with developers and teams in order to understand their pain points, suggest new practices and tools, and help the teams adopt our products.
The role is part of our Cloud Platform DevEx team, whose mission is to enable our development teams to deliver exceptional customer experiences with ease, substantial autonomy and reduced cognitive load, by providing them with the interfaces that allow them to build, test, ship, operate and decommission their services on Cloud native infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with development teams to understand their needs, challenges, and pain points, ensuring our internal customers (aka developers) voices are properly heard and their needs addressed.
- Design, develop, and maintain tools, systems and practices that increase developer productivity by improving the way interactions with the company's cloud platforms and processes take place. In particular, we are looking for people who may take key interfaces such as our Developer Web Portal, CLI or CI/CD pipeline tools to the next level.
- Offer guidance and support in the adoption of DevEx tools, systems and practices.
- Establish a feedback loop with developers using DevEx tools and systems, incorporating their input into continuous improvement efforts.
- Create comprehensive documentation and conduct training sessions to support our tools and processes adoption and usage.
- Continuously research the Platform Engineering and DevEx landscapes, keeping track of trends in methodologies, processes and tools in developer-platform interfaces and tooling, and conducting quick experiments and POCs to evaluate their potential and effect on developer productivity and happiness.
Requirements:
- Passion for quality in software and for building internal tools, with close-to-zero tolerance for shortcuts (aka hacks)
- Creative and inquisitive mindset, with skills in independent research and in creating POCs
- 7+ years of experience in software development, preferably using Go and/or Python (experience with Typescript and Frontend also welcomed).
- Solid understanding and experience working with pipeline automation and CI/CD systems
- Understanding of GitOps concept, preferably some experience with ArgoCD
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- [Optional] Some experience with Cloud APIs (AWS, Azure or GCP)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills:
- be able to discuss and defend opinions when designing a solution or approach
- be able to support developers in using DevEx offerings
