About the Legal Team

Our legal team is responsible for managing risk across the business while bringing our product and operations to life in a way that is consistent with our mission. We partner with finance, engineering, product, marketing, operations and more to craft a marketplace that delivers business to our pros while helping millions of customers get their projects done each year. Our job is to enable our team across the company to do their best work while keeping the company’s best interests at heart.

About the Role

The General Counsel role is the chief manager of risk at Thumbtack, all while enabling the business to remain innovative and thrive. The role interfaces with all key roles across the business from the executive level to independent contributors and across all departments. In addition to managing day to day operations on the legal team the role is responsible for preparing the company for its next stage of growth and transition. The role reports to our CEO.


  • Manage risk while enabling the business
    • Understand key risks to the business across the full stack from executives to independent contributors and across departments, with a particular focus on marketplace trust & safety, employee matters and commercial law
    • Put in place frameworks around how we think about our toughest legal issues
    • Ensure we’re proactive about our risks and opportunities -- prepare for the worst while enabling the best
    • Communicate and collaborate effectively across teams and roles to educate team about risks while enabling people in their work
  • Build Thumbtack towards public company readiness
    • Partner with Finance, exec team to prepare company for IPO-readiness 
    • Manage and own all securities filings necessary to go and stay public
    • Work with Finance, executive teams to prepare for capital raises and issuances
  • Build and manage high performing Legal team
    • Hire and manage the right people and roles on the team
    • Regularly recruit and hire quality talent
    • Ensure Legal team executes effectively with a rigorous operational cadence and a bench of expertise in-house and outside
    • Build a culture of inclusion and collaboration on the team

Must-Have Qualifications

  • 2+ years of public company expertise, either as sitting General Counsel or as a senior legal person at a significantly larger public company.
  • Has managed one or more legal teams at an organization of the same or larger size as Thumbtack
  • Collaborate and strategic minded business partner

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Experience having done an IPO previously
  • Experience working in a marketplace company
  • Experience working at a high-growth startup
