About This Role

Strava is the world’s largest athletic community. The social platform at the center of connected fitness. With over 85 million athletes on Strava and 2 million more joining every month, we are growing fast. We are looking for a Director of Research to join our team. This individual will be excited to help develop and lead our qualitative research team, and strategy and operations as we enter this next phase of our rapid growth.

Reporting to the VP of Design and Research, this role will be the day to day leader of a team of five experienced qualitative researchers who are embedded in our product teams for optimal collaboration. Helping drive strategic company-wide efforts. You will also partner with many teams and leaders from product design, analytics, product management, and the broader leadership team, to continue to evolve Strava’s understanding of our athletes. You will help coach/develop researchers, enhance research operations/infrastructure, and champion the voice of the athlete throughout the organization.

Drive the growth of research craft & culture

  • Partner with Senior Leadership, Product Management, Design, Analytics and Engineering to identify areas of opportunity for a deeper athlete understanding. Prioritize a portfolio of research projects that aligns with company strategy, product roadmaps, and business goals.

  • Lead, champion, and inspire a team of experienced researchers by providing vision and direction, grounded in Strava’s principles of antiracism, inclusion, and accessibility across Strava and with our athletes.

  • Support a team to help deliver high-quality insights that impact strategy across the company and the development process: from foundational discovery to evaluative testing to go-to-market.

  • Bring a sense of joy to the work and to the team. Be grounded, and model a growth attitude and desire to continue learning and get better.

  • Support the team in all aspects of research efforts: collaboration, leadership, scoping, recruiting, method selection, collection, analysis, and presentation.

  • Work with the broader design team and company to learn and elevate the overall research practice through improvements to process, tools, training, and other capabilities.

Support the management of the research pipeline and roadmap

  • Collaborate inside and outside of the team to identify and investigate topics/trends that are strategically relevant to the entire company.

  • Develop and maintain short and long-term research priorities and create scenarios that help leaders envision the impact of different decisions.

Evolve research operations

  • Lead initiatives to continue optimizing our research tools and processes, so we can improve efficiency and impact as we scale.

  • Facilitate collaboration across other parts of the business to enhance research operations and increase operational efficiency, such as CRM, Legal, etc..

We’re excited about you because:

  • You have 10+ years or equivalent experience with human-centered, qualitative research methodologies.

  • You have 5+ years experience managing, supporting and growing experienced research teams through exceptional communication skills (written and verbal), and collaborative mindset.

  • You have deep, hands-on experience and shareable examples of leading a variety of projects from start to finish, across all stages of a product lifecycle (discovery to go-to-market), and leveraging best practice qualitative research principles, methods, and facilitation.

  • You have deep experience partnering across the organization to help teams with complementary skills and perspectives (e.g. qualitative research, data & analytics, customer support) come together to form a full picture of a problem or opportunity.

  • You have experience integrating multiple types of data (e.g. qualitative findings, market research, survey data, analytics, competitive landscape) into a singular strategic point of view.

  • You have experience with navigating the balance and tradeoffs between serving product team roadmaps and company-wide roadmaps.

  • You are adept at collaboration and extraordinarily communicative in a fast-paced environment where collaboration and understanding people is required.

  • You have the capacity to creatively adapt methods and approaches to meet the unique constraints of a constantly evolving environment.

  • You have strong literacy with tried-and-tested qualitative research and research-ops tools as well an awareness of emerging, modern tools worth considering as the practice grows.
