The associate editor will be one of a dynamic team charged with driving audience growth and engagement for the full breadth of Sightline Media brands. This individual will be savvy in social media best practices, multimedia approaches to storytelling, and tracking metrics to maximize content to drive traffic. The associate editor will have the ability to transform a dry, boring headline into something with edge and know how to elevate a story with compelling video or photo gallery, while also having solid copyediting skills to ensure quality content. This individual will collaborate with the brand editorial teams and the video team to come up with new, innovative approaches to get our content noticed and expand audience and engagement.
Reporting to the senior editor of digital operations, the associate editor will serve as an in-house expert in the best practices digitally, and push reporters and editors to do more with content and properly leverage social media channels. An interest in the military and federal operations is a must - knowledge of those markets a major plus.
Specific Job Duties and Responsibilities
Social media: Support editorial teams to push content out via the many social media channels, and to provide best practices for editorial team to utilize their own networks in an effective way to expand audience and engagement. (60%)
Editing: Tackle stories and videos to ensure quality, but also spice up headlines and descriptions for the greatest bang for the buck and to expand viewership and mainstream interest, while also being true to the core audience of our brands. (25%)
Multimedia: Reviewing content on sites and engaging with editors and reporters and the video team, generate multimedia elements that can complement stories and also standalone. (15%)
The ideal candidate brings at least five years of directly relevant journalism experience, as evidenced by the following
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or similar field is preferred
- Extensive experience in news media in digital, print, social media and video form
- Leadership experience
- Experience with events, webcasts and custom products
- Basic and fundamental MS Office skills, ability to comprehend and work in content management systems, social media skills.
