Role Overview

Maven is looking for someone to own the "student" side of our marketplace. This is a role for a player-coach who wants the responsibility of leading an org but enjoys being in the weeds and actually doing the work. Your primary KPI will be course sales driven by Maven-led channels.


You'll be managing the marketing and growth strategy and defining the Maven brand from scratch. You are someone who is good at experimenting with new channels, and hacking them to Maven's benefit. This is a generalist role - ideally someone with sufficient numeracy to run and measure growth initiatives and sufficient taste to ensure these initiatives represent Maven well. We believe in operating leverage, so you should enjoy maximizing impact while minimizing costs. You'll start with 2 direct reports who have each been at Maven for 2+ years and are well-versed in our data, lifecycle, content and event marketing. The non-headcount budget is roughly $30-50K/month. You will have access to our instructor base which is filled with incredible leaders from Asana, Google, Stripe, etc. Also, I (Gagan, CEO) am at your disposal with 30-50% of my time. You will run the show, but I'm here as a resource to amplify what you do.

Team Overview

You'll report to me, the CEO, and be on the leadership team alongside three other experienced leaders. We've all previously had significant roles at a startup that has either exited or IPO'ed. You'll have input on company strategy, culture and operations. The P&L will be transparent to you along with any investor updates and all company data. We work about 45-60 hours/week with high flexibility on your time and no-meeting Wednesdays. We have many parents at the company and the role is full remote with in-person offsites 4x/year.

The company is 15 people, growing to 18 total by Q1 2024.


The compensation for this role is equity-heavy with cash comp of about $180k-$250k in salary with strong benefits.


You have helped a consumer-facing startup grow from $0-10M to $50-100M in GMV or equivalent.

You have run a growth or marketing team before, or been a major part of one. Ideally you've had at least 4 direct reports in your career.

You have excellent taste and understand consumers extremely well.

Your quantitative understanding is high, and you know how to use analytics tools enough to be dangerous. We run on Amplitude and Metabase (similar to Looker).

You always treat the company you work at as your own. In Maven's case, you will be a significant equity holder so this is ideally a plus for you.


Who We Are

Maven is building the university of tomorrow. We're starting by building the largest marketplace of expert-led cohort-based courses on the Internet. This is a major innovation from existing video-based courses, because cohort-based courses involve a live instructor, an engaging cohort community and the accountability of a start and end time. Whereas a standard self-paced course has a 5-10% completion rate, Maven's completion rate is closer to 70-90%.
