Khan Academy India (KAI) aims to deliver a world class user experience to learners in India that is locally relevant and is enabled by a strong on-the-ground team and operations. Khan Academy content is already available in Hindi, Hinglish, Punjabi, Marathi, Kannada and Gujarati. From  under 500,000 learners in 2016, we are now serving almost 4 million learners a month in India. As Country Director, Khan Academy India (KAI) you will be responsible for driving the overall vision, strategy, growth, and sustainability of our work in India. Additionally, you will be responsible for aspects related to the board of directors and key partner management (donors, states, private sector organizations etc). You will work with the leadership team in India and functional leaders in Mountain View to drive cross-functional coordination and overall operational efficiency at KAI.


For Khan Academy, India has the largest user base outside the US. However, we have a long way to go in India to reach underserved learners and teachers. You will serve as both a strategic leader and a hands on, cross functional leader to help increase our scale and impact across learners in India. 

 As Country Director, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Strategic direction and goal alignment
    • Synthesize a clear, actionable, consistent strategy in the face of many compelling opportunities. Prioritize aggressively and effectively.
    • Link the long-term vision (the big picture) with the near-term objectives (the details). 
    • Communicate effectively to connect the vision with the work people are doing on a day-to-day basis.
    • Work closely with the India Leadership Team and the VP International to develop and align short and medium term goals.
  • Growth and impact
    • Drive initiatives that are user focused and help increase our reach in an accelerated time frame.
    • Ensure that the initiatives balance scale with efficacious usage that leads to improvements in learning outcomes.
    • Drive articulation and accountability of organization level metrics across functions. 
    • Leverage data to provide recommendations regarding specific opportunities and investments.
  • Financial sustainability
    • Responsible for KAI’s financial sustainability by diversifying our donor base and providing stewardship to our existing donors.
    • Guide the overall financial plans and budgets across functions.
    • Oversee proactive risk identification for KAI and follow through with respective teams to ensure appropriate risk response strategies. 
  • Key Partnerships Management
    • Support and leverage KAI’s board of directors.
    • Effectively steward relationships with key partners including Ministries of Education, key state partners and private sector organizations.
    • Represent KAI externally at all levels including government,  partners, and  media.
  • Strengthen org and team foundation 
    • Support the India leadership team to ensure we attract and retain the right talent with the right culture fit. 
    • Define and drive the operational cadence for key processes that help support and strengthen the team.



You are someone with:

  • 18+ years of professional experience in scaling programs and/or organizations
  • Passionate about education and Khan Academy's mission
  • Demonstrated ability to steward relationships at the highest leadership levels across partners
  • Familiarity with education research and how that connects with on-ground work
  • A user centric mindset with strong empathy for our users including learners and teachers 
  • High levels of persistence to overcome obstacles and a bias towards action
  • Ability to work with high levels of ambiguity and complexity, while driving clear outcomes
  • An articulate and versatile communication style across different stakeholders 
  • Ability to lead and build high performing teams and build/ be the custodian of the organization culture
