We are seeking an experienced Controller/VP of Finance to be the first dedicated finance hire for Oak Essentials.  This position is based in the greater LA area and reports to the CEO.  For now, the Controller will work closely with the Jenni Kayne accounting team (AR/AP) which operates as a shared service with Oak Essentials.  As we continue to expand, we are seeking a knowledgeable Controller with solid experience in corporate accounting, internal reporting, inventory control, production, and the audit process. Candidates must have CPA and prior consumer products experience in wholesale and e-commerce

Role and Responsibilities:

As the Controller/VP, Finance, your primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Manage all financial accounting and reporting functions for the company, including day-to-day accounting, month-end close and annual reporting process. 
  • Generating accurate and timely monthly financial statements, prepare monthly reporting package, including comparative reports of operating results and variance explanations.
  • Develop, grow and oversee small accounting staff (e.g. AR/AP/Bookkeeper).
  • Maintain the accounting database.
  • Prepare for and lead the yearly audit and work with external tax firm for the income tax return.
  • Review bank reconciliations, loan schedules, and all other balance sheet schedules.
  • Maintain cash forecasts and cash spend and approve weekly check run to vendors
  • Maintain a deep understanding of transactional activity from origination to financial statement impact with ability to identify and address issues across systems
  • Build out and improve internal controls, policy and procedures throughout the organization
  • Identify opportunities to automate routine activities to improve team efficiency as the company grows
  • Assist the CEO and SVP of Growth in preparing the annual corporate budgets.
  • Work closely with demand planning and SVP of Growth to ensure retail velocity is accounted for in financial forecasts and proper accruals are made for all potential retail chargebacks and expenses
  • Partner with the CEO and SVP of Growth in running scenarios and adjusting and updating financial forecasts
  • Oversee payroll, and other key admin areas such as insurance, contracts and some legal
  • Oversee credit process for wholesale customers.
  • Oversee inventory with planner.
  • Special projects such as monthly and quarterly investor board packages as required

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years as a Controller or Asst. Controller
  • Extensive knowledge of technical accounting matters including GAAP, revenue recognition and tax matters
  • CPA license required, college accounting degree and public accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Consumer products (beauty or personal care industry preferred) and inventory experience required
  • Experience building and managing an accounting team
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Ability to work cross functionally and build strong interpersonal relationships with other teams in the business
  • Expertise in accounting and tax software a must, ie. ERP (Netsuite preferred), Excel, Avalara
  • Willingness to work outside of regular business hours when required to meet deadlines

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer

The annual base salary range for this position is $150,000-$200,000. The base salary is determined by experience, education, skills, and location.  In addition, this full-time position is eligible for the following company benefits:
