San Francisco Hillel (SF Hillel) provides inclusive, innovative, and fun Jewish experiences and programs for college and graduate students across San Francisco. With vibrant student communities at SF State, USF, UC Law SF, and UCSF, our professionals mentor students of all Jewish backgrounds as they author their adult identities and launch their careers. The Assistant Director leads SF Hillel’s Student Life Team, a team of student engagement professionals who cultivate Jewish life on our four base campuses. The Assistant Director is responsible for driving the student experience across our four base campuses and additional ancillary schools through data-driven strategy, engagement with campus and community partners, and inspirational support for the Student Life Team.

What You’ll Do
Program Leadership
- Design and execute an ambitious engagement strategy for the Student Life Team to connect undergraduate and graduate students at San Francisco State University (SFSU), University of San Francisco (USF), UC Law SF, and University of California San Francisco (UCSF) to SF Hillel and Jewish campus communities.
- Supervise student-facing communications and social media to reach and engage as many students as possible.
- Craft and supervise the provision of pluralistic Jewish and Israel education for students from a variety of backgrounds, leveraging campus and community connections to provide enriching opportunities and connecting with key student leaders and inspiring their personal and professional growth.
- Lead the Student Life Team to plan and staff Shabbat and holiday programming, reviewing and approving logistics and program planning.
- Oversee and ensure the success of Design Tribe (SF Hillel’s leadership development program) by deploying your Student Life Team colleagues as mentors to student leaders who will design robust program activities, Shabbat, holiday celebrations, and meaningful Jewish experiences for themselves and their peers.
- Coach the Student Life Team to create meaningful immersive student experiences, including student retreats and Taglit-Birthright Israel trips. Staff immersive trips as needed.
- Guide the Student Life Team to design intentional and effective pre-and post-immersive programs to drive deepened student engagement.
- Create and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with Jewish organizations and University professionals to advance a positive campus experience and protect the safety and inclusion of Jewish students.
- Build meaningful relationships with key university staff and faculty that yield productive collaboration.
- Mentor, supervise, and lead key SF Hillel student leaders as they plan initiatives and student advocacy projects on campus.
Management and Administration
- Supervise, mentor, coach, and support the growth of the Student Life Team as they manage their portfolios and projects.
- Oversee the program budget, distribute funds, account for costs, and work with students and staff to maximize SF Hillel funds’ impact.
- Supervise the maintenance of the SF Hillel student database and oversee the collection of our engagement data in partnership with Hillel International.
- Serve as a thought partner on the student experience to the Executive Director, campus professionals, and organizational partners.
- Lend support to the organization’s development activities by providing student success stories and data for grant report writing, assisting the Executive Director and Associate Director of Community Engagement with donor stewardship, strategic fundraising conversations, and special events.
Qualifications
- Four or more years of experience in Jewish, experiential, or higher education.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Proven success in building welcoming communities, managing a team, providing mentorship, building relationships, and managing multiple projects while maintaining quality.
- A commitment to pluralism and comfort with your own identities.
- Understanding of what motivates people.
- Comfort in managing and leading individuals and teams, as well as working independently and collaboratively.
- An entrepreneurial spirit.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
What You’ll Receive
- $70,000 to $80,000 year salary
- 90% employer contribution for medical, dental, and vision of base Kaiser plan (premium plans for Kaiser and Blue Shield also available)
- 403b retirement plan through TIAA, 5% employer contribution after 2 years of employment
- Flexible vacation plan and around 12-13 holidays per year
- 10 days paid medical time
