About this Role
At Berkeley Hillel, we’re looking for someone who is a creative & outgoing professional with strong interpersonal, communication, supervision, management and project management skills to serve as the Associate Director. They will manage the dynamic Student Life team, and support and coach the staff and student leaders that make Berkeley Hillel such a vibrant place to celebrate Jewish life. The Associate Director should be passionate about building relationships, supporting and supervising staff, empowering student leaders, and thinking strategically about Jewish life at UC Berkeley. The Associate Director will work closely with the Executive Director in reaching both long and short-term organizational goals.
What You’ll Do:
- Supervise and Manage the Student Life Team (Includes 5 staff members)
- Oversee and manage all of the programmatic aspects of student-facing events
- Manage a program budget in excess of $300K
- Manage the hiring of all new student-facing personnel
- Serve as a close partner to the Executive Director in implementing new and existing initiatives
- Be part of senior leadership along with the COO and the Executive Director
- Liaison with Student Affairs staff at UC Berkeley

- Managing a diverse team of Jewish professionals who work across the entire Jewish student population
- Managing multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality across all areas and adjusting on the fly
- Seeing the big picture of the organization as well as the day-to-day details of student initiatives
- Connecting to and interacting with the diversity of students and constituents involved with UC Berkeley Hillel
- Building strategic partnerships
- Figuring out what makes people tick, and applying that knowledge to strategically help connect them to their passions and interests
The right Associate Director will possess the following key attributes:
- Supervision – The right candidate will bring successful experience in the supervision of full-time employees with familiarity in areas of conflict resolution, empathetic leadership, and DEI.
- Management – The Associate Director is someone who has experience in managing a team of professionals, running weekly team meetings, inspiring staff, holding them accountable to the goals of the organization, and pushing them professionally.
- Program/Initiative Implementation – The Associate Director should have experience in planning and implementing programs and initiatives. They should have a desire to support staff in creating programs from the ground up and work with students in providing a diversity of Jewish opportunities.
- Passion for Jewish Education – The Associate Director should have experience in informal Jewish education and a passion for supporting the Jewish Student Life team to approach their work as educators. They will support the implementation of Berkeley Hillel’s Educational vision.
- A Strategic Community Organizer –The Associate Director will be able to think strategically about how to reach and impact students not involved in the traditional networks and will utilize methodologies of community organizing in order to manage and strategize for success.
- Organized –The Associate Director needs to be organized and understand the big picture of the organization and how best to implement programs to best serve the desired outcomes.
- Strong Written & Verbal Skills - The Associate Director will have strong interpersonal communication skills, active listening skills, and political acumen. They should have experience publishing materials on the web and some understanding of web technology, social media, and online advertising.
- A Relationship Builder –The Associate Director will be capable of building rapport and developing meaningful relationships with a wide variety of students.
What You’ll Bring to the Job:
- A Master’s degree and 6 – 8 years of professional work experience. Experience as a volunteer or professional in a Jewish organization is a plus. An advanced degree is preferred
- Experience in supervising employees and guiding them toward success and growth
- Exceptional organization, leadership, and communication skills
- Have a team-oriented approach to work while still being a self-starter, with a strong work ethic, a sense of humor, an ability to take risks and learn from situations when things don’t turn out as expected
- A deep passion for building pluralistic Jewish communities, serving as a peer educator, and creating a welcoming, vibrant, and deeply enriching Jewish environment on and around campus
What You’ll Receive:
- Competitive salary in the nonprofit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $115,000-$125,000 and will be commensurate with experience
- A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, Life, AD&D and Long Term Disability (LTD) insurances, Flexible Spending accounts, Unlimited PTO and generous medical time, and parental leave
