Assistant Director

Role Overview: The Assistant Director oversees and manages Tulane Hillel’s student-generated and led programming. This position on our team is someone toward which students gravitate. You will partner with our Executive Director, Gary Brandt, to set the vision for all programming and lead the staff Engagement Team and our Tulane Jewish Leaders (students) to deliver exceptional programs. The Assistant Director will be a compelling presence at most of our programs, many of which occur in the evenings, Friday nights, and Sundays.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the Engagement Team of two to four early-career staff members
    • Hire, onboard, and evaluate program staff members through regular supervision meetings and provide coaching regarding job performance and professional development
    • Coordinate the ongoing program calendar
    • Oversee multiple student interns (e.g. data, marketing, Shabbat)
    • Collect, analyze, and report on student engagement data throughout the year
  • Lead Tulane Jewish Leaders (TJL), our student-generated signature programming initiative
    • Support the Engagement Team in providing hands-on assistance to approximately 300 student mentees. You will also have a portfolio of 20-40 students
    • Ensure compelling marketing, student communications, and strong attendance at over 125 initiatives throughout the academic year
  • Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team
    • Contribute to setting vision and upholding organizational values
    • Communicate and cooperate effectively in fundraising and building operations
    • Manage the program team budget
    • Foster and maintain relationships with community partners, including university student groups, university administrators, community non-profits, and the Tulane Hillel Board
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of weekly Shabbat programming and Jewish Holidays
    • Supervise our Manager of Jewish Life and Learning to partner with student organizations for Shabbat
    • Coordinate with our in-house kosher restaurant for meals and catering
    • Create meaningful and engaging pluralistic holiday observances and rituals

You bring enthusiasm, energy, and joy to programs you’re leading and feel comfortable in front of groups, particularly students. You are current on communication and social media trends and build genuine relationships with others, including college-age students and your colleagues.
  • A collaborative approach to work - You are a life-long learner who solicits and is open to feedback, believes you always have something new to learn or grow in, and enjoys working with a team to accomplish a goal.

What You’ve Accomplished

  • Held a leadership position in previous professional experiences (formally or informally)
  • Have coached, mentored, and/or managed officially other adults in a professional capacity
  • Approximately 5-6 years of professional working experience
  • Experience executing programming in a communal setting
  • Successfully worked on and with a team that regularly meets and exceeds goals
  • Bachelor’s Degree

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $68,000-$84,000 annually. Starting salary will be determined based on someone’s previous experience and equity amongst our team.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, life insurance, Long Term Disability (LTD), Flexible Spending Plan. Tulane Hillel covers 80% to 100% of individual employee health insurance premiums.
  • After completing your second year in the role, Tulane Hillel automatically contributes 5% to your retirement plan.
