The Advanced R&D Engineering team at Desktop Metal is seeking a Senior Research & Development Engineer to contribute to the development of next-generation metal 3D printers.

About the Team:

The Advanced R&D Engineering team is inventing and rapidly testing solutions to technical challenges on novel metal 3D printing technology. Team members tend to be hands-on generalists who span several engineering disciplines and contribute to the project accordingly.  Technical and strategic decisions are made collaboratively and all members participate in brainstorming and design reviews, regardless of job title or experience level.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The primary responsibility of this role is contributing to the development of next-generation printing technology, in large part though rapidly testing concepts by designing and constructing test fixtures and running experiments.  A successful candidate will be able to use the resources available at DM (eg. machine shop, electronic test equipment, large selection of parts) to build test rigs and solve technical issues as they arise -- in hours, not days or weeks.  
  • In addition, the role requires ownership of the lab-scale production of key consumables, which should take about 20% time.  This involves procuring material, precision machine-tool and hand assembly work, as well as assessing the quality of the parts produced and maintaining sufficient stocks of in-spec consumables for use in the lab.

Example Project:

  • Identify problem needing to be solved (failure or function enhancement required).
  • Identify fundamental issues and relevant physics.
  • Research if similar problems have been solved in academia or industry -- many of the problems we solve are not well-described in literature or possible to simulate using analysis tools 
  • Identify promising paths forward (usually as a group).  Invent new solutions.
  • Identify rapid (1-2 day) tests which can be run to determine if a given path is promising.
  • Quickly build required test rigs.   At this early stage, there is an extreme emphasis is on speed, which generally precludes sending parts out to be made, and the temperatures involved generally preclude plastic 3D printing.  Therefore, it’s crucial to be able to rapidly machine and/or modify parts on-hand or available from next-day  suppliers.  Software, motion control, instrumentation and automation (if needed) are likewise put together in a matter of minutes or hours using existing in-house equipment.
  • Design and run experiments and take data, watching carefully for other effects or unexpected behavior which might suggest alternative paths forward.
  • Evaluate results and iterate as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Broad familiarity with industry solutions to a wide variety of problems (for example measurement and control, precision manufacturing, good mechanical design practice, etc.)
  • Deep knowledge of specific technical areas based on previous project work.
  • Ability to quickly acquire deep knowledge in new areas
  • Ability to invent new solutions
  • Excellent grasp of mechanical engineering fundamentals, and ability to use this knowledge to inform designs and experiments
  • Strong design sense and engineering intuition; ability to generate ideas and evaluate them via basic hand-calculations and order-of-magnitude estimation based on the relevant physics
  • Familiarity with a wide range of material properties and applications (metals including refractory, engineering ceramics, high-performance plastics, graphite, etc.)
  • Familiarity with industrial electronics, sensors, test equipment, automation
  • Ability to quickly build test systems from in-stock or quickly-available materials and equipment
  • Sufficient proficiency with machine tools (vertical mill, lathe, drill press, band saw at minimum) to quickly, accurately, and safely make or modify parts in metals and other materials; ability to work to tight tolerances and with exotic materials when needed
