The role of the Program Management Team is to shape and accelerate the delivery of GDM’s highest priorities. We do this through translating strategy into program plans, implementing efficient ways of working, and developing successful  teams to drive end to end delivery of our GDM objectives. We provide focus for our teams through co-developing goals and priorities, continually anchoring teams back to these. We continually pursue sustainable ways to optimize our work, striving to ensure we cultivate an environment where people can be both highly collaborative and deeply creative, making responsible and groundbreakingtechnical progress at pace. We build positive relationships with teams, bringing clarity to ambiguity and providing stability during change. Collaborating across org boundaries & roles to pull in theright expertise at the right time. This allows us to provide a holistic view of what’s happening across GDM to identify early signals, insights, and risks with recommended actions.

The role

This is a Senior Technical Program Manager role, partnering with teams across our Data function . This collaborative, diverse group is situated primarily in London with some teams in Mountain View, and partners closely with a wide variety of internal stakeholders across Google DeepMind and Google’s Cloud and Infrastructure teams. 

This is a leadership role within Google DeepMind’s Data Operations Team, with line management responsibility as well as opportunities to act as an IC and Technical Program Manager. The Data Operations Team is accountable for enabling GDM to train the best models with the best data.


Key responsibilities

As a Senior Technical Program Manager in this team you will play a key role in working with internal and external partners to accelerate Google DeepMind’s data goals in a safe and responsible way.

Team & Technical Leadership

  • Develop and lead a dedicated team of (technical) program managers
  • Ability to navigate rapidly evolving conditions and a competitive landscape, including pivoting strategy, keep pace with research, and leading with resilience
  • Participate in the Program Management Leadership team, including mentoring, best practice development and giving technical talks

Strategic Collaboration and Vision

  • Partner closely with research and engineering leads to develop strategy and overall priorities across the platform and infrastructure organisation.
  • Partner with internal teams to accelerate development of state of the art infrastructure and tooling for data collection and processing.
  • Communicate regularly to stakeholders, sharing information for current and future platform users.

Data Driven Insights and Driving Organizational Change

  • Define metrics and achievements to accelerate discovery, evaluate the success of programs against their aims, goals and objectives, and share lessons and insights across the wider business
  • Conduct regular retrospectives on successes and failures and provide independent analysis
  • Drive change in a matrix organization through relationships, clear and motivating ideas, and strong change management 

About you

In order to set you up for success in this role, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • You need to possess extensive industry experience in the field of Data, in order to partner on technical strategy with leaders
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise in technical program management with the proven skill to navigate through ambiguity and adjust and adapt plans and strategies as project conditions change
  • Extensive line management experience, supporting the development of pioneering professionals and capable leaders.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technical domains, gaining sufficient working knowledge to understand the challenges and risk while balancing perspective and holding a broader view of trade offs and opportunities.
  • Experience supporting teams in fast-paced environments to drive large-scale program delivery from concept to completion, leading through multiple evolutions along the way. Demonstrated ability to prioritize, adapt to change, and provide flexible thought partnership in a rapidly evolving landscape.
  • Experience in partnering with senior engineering leadership and bringing straightforward solutions to complex spaces, both interpersonal and technical.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to develop meaningful relationships with key partners and use this to influence action and outcomes
  • Desire to continue hands on delivery contributing to the most critical Technical Infrastructure challenges as and where needed.
  • You are demonstrably passionate about advancing AI.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Demonstrated understanding of how to successfully work with, advocate for and develop talented people from a wide variety of backgrounds, including non-traditional ones
