A Plans Examiner Supervisor job is available with the City of Fort Worth Development Services Department. The Plans Examiner division seeks to make Fort Worth the most livable city in Texas by promoting orderly growth and development, safe construction and neighborhood vitality. The division helps complete this mission by performing a variety of technical duties in reviewing, approving and processing building applications in assigned area, including building, zoning, electrical, plumbing and mechanical.

With a staff of eight employees, the plans exam division reviews a diverse mix of commercial and residential projects for conformance to building codes and laws. Projects include single family homes, thirty story high-rise buildings, museums by world renowned architects, mixed-use developments, and everything in-between. Staff is also encouraged to explore innovative alternative solutions to address code issues and serve our customers.

The Plans Examiner Supervisor job responsibilities include:

  • Managing a diverse workforce to achieve aggressive performance goals in a fast paced environment.
  • Clearly and appropriately communicating complex information regarding building codes and ordinance to audiences with widely varying levels of understanding. Preference will be given for speaking Spanish.
  • Evaluating group and individual performance based on established measures and identifying potential new measures as processes and workloads evolve.
  • Reading, understanding, and interpreting documents and theories associated with the building construction industry.
  • Using business and permitting software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Accela Automation, and Adobe Acrobat.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering, architecture, or a related field and
  • Four (4) years of experience in plans examination, inspections, architecture, engineering, or a related filed, including one year of administrative or lead supervisory responsibility.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a certificate from a national model code organization showing satisfactory competence in code knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual
  • International Code Council Building Plans Examiner certification
  • Permitting software experience, preferably Accela

Conditions of Employment

Candidates who do not meet the Education requirement, may be considered if they have more relevant work experience than the position requires. Those selected for employment will be required to pass Pre-Employment checks depending on the position requirements. Those could include, but are not limited to: criminal background check, drug screen, education verification, etc. Criminal convictions will be considered on a case by case basis.
