The ACLU of Massachusetts (“ACLUM”) seeks a Legal Assessment Attorney to manage receipt of and response to requests from members of the public for legal assistance or resources they may access outside of ACLUM. These requests number several thousand per year, and ACLUM can provide direct legal representation to only a small number of people whose cases present significant civil liberties and civil rights issues. This position manages a team of trained volunteers who accept initial inquiry phone calls and written information from the public. The Legal Assessment Attorney reviews and screens the requests, gathers additional information as needed for an assessment, escalates requests for review by ACLUM attorneys, and determines appropriate responses for the balance.

Flexibility to accommodate work during evenings and weekends when warranted is a key requirement for this role.

Essential Duties

  • Manage system for timely and appropriate response to requests for legal assistance or resources; respond directly, as
  • Facilitate prompt communication with staff attorneys about requests needing their attention, and relay of related
  • Train, coordinate day-to-day activities of, and support Legal Resource Team
  • Manage the case management database and other systems to organize Legal Resources data and respond to requests for
  • Maintain up-to-date information about alternative resources through which individuals can seek further
  • Provide regular reports to the Legal Director or their designee, analyzing intake volume, trends and other information, as

Other Responsibilities

Special projects and other tasks as assigned by the Senior and Managing Attorney or Legal Director, consistent with collective bargaining requirements.

Qualifications, Experience and Attributes

  • Attorney admitted to the Massachusetts

  • Knowledge of external legal resources and organizations in Massachusetts
  • Direct supervisory experience and
  • Excellent organizational and analytical
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a keen customer service
  • Experience working with volunteers in a professional role or as an active
  • Experience working with hotline or information and referral services strongly
  • Proficiency with case management and relational databases or other query and report- writing software, or strong aptitude for learning related
  • Strong belief in the ACLU’s mission and work, and in preserving and defending the civil rights and individual liberties guaranteed by the US and Massachusetts Constitution and laws.
