The Temporary Parole Representation Project and Litigation Support Assistant
is a member of the ACLU of Maryland’s Legal Department, based in our Baltimore office. The Legal Department consists of five staff attorneys and four non-lawyers, as well as several interns and volunteers. The legal team is currently working through litigation and advocacy to protect and expand civil rights and racial justice here in Maryland, which includes protecting immigrants’ rights, reforming our criminal legal system, pushing for police accountability, challenging discrimination, and much more.
The Temporary Parole Representation Project and Litigation Support Assistant will provide administrative support for a case currently being litigated and also a related project. The case, MRJI v. Hogan, seeks justice for people who are serving life sentences for crimes they committed when they were children by ensuring they receive the meaningful opportunity for release they are due by law. The project, currently called the Maryland Juvenile Lifer Parole Representation Project, pairs individuals who are eligible for parole with pro bono attorneys, who help them prepare and present their cases before the parole commission.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, with meticulous attention to detail, and experience working with voluminous documents. The candidate should have patience, stamina, and enthusiasm for administrative work from projects complex and highly technical to the more mundane. And, they value and respect differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Help organize and catalog voluminous documents, including creating spreadsheets or databases indexing contents.
- Create a user-friendly system for document upload and retrieval, including scanning and uploading paper documents.
- As needed, communicate with people serving life sentences and others to obtain or verify information.
- As needed, review records to support litigation in discovery phase and create electronic and hard-copy binders.
- Help ensure documents are redacted appropriately and extracting and synthesizing non-confidential information for dissemination.
Parole Representation Project Support
- Help develop systems for parole representation project to ensure updated information about parole status, training materials, and potential counsel,
- Help identify and communicate with potential pro bono counsel and clients and develop systems for tracking and updating records
- Communicate with lawyers, family members, and individuals; give updates, answer questions, share documents, get permission for sharing information.
- Help support training events as needed.
- Help develop public-facing materials as assigned.
- Must enjoy and have a strong ability to organize and manage information electronically and in hard copy.
- Must be detail-oriented and see purpose in detail and support work.
- Must have strong proficiency with office equipment and technology, Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe Acrobat.
- Must be comfortable speaking clearly, empathetically and kindly to people in a variety of situations.
- A strong commitment to racial equity, dismantling white supremacy and incorporating a structural power analysis into work, with knowledge and understanding of how power is manifested in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstances.
Compensation and Benefits
Pay: $20/hour for approximately 30-40 hours of work per week for approximately four months from start date. Excellent benefits include paid vacation; office holidays; paid sick days; medical and dental insurance for staff members, their dependents and spouse/domestic partner; life and long-term disability insurance; and 401(k) plan with employer match; direct exposure to cutting-edge civil liberties and civil rights work. This is a position covered by the overtime protections of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
