● Establish, manage and maintain the highest editorial standards across the ACLU in the creation and production of short- and long-form written content

● Manage daily workflow and production of written content from ACLU staff and affiliate contributors, including setting and managing deadlines that take into account reviews from stakeholders

● Lead strategic thinking and material development around written content needs on issues, campaigns, and projects to ensure strong, on-message, compelling writing

● Maintain a content calendar that includes articles, blog posts, op-eds, long-form editorial pieces, reports, and special projects

● Solicit blog posts and other written content from ACLU national staff, ACLU affiliate staff, and allies, and manage the editing process for the blog

● Work closely with senior staff and communications team members as appropriate, to develop or revise content for message consistency and maximum impact for written products and content

● Write and/or edit major reports and long-form content, in partnership with colleagues, author(s), outside partners/vendors, and the communications department staff

● Provide writing assistance, editorial guidance, and editing on written content to ACLU national and affiliate staff, as needed

● Partner with digital team colleagues to build and promote content in order to drive engagement on content and build support for the ACLU and its efforts

● Keep, analyze and react to content metrics to ensure quality and identify opportunities for improving content viewership and engagement

● Write, edit, and pitch op-eds and features to be placed in major media outlets. Work to maintain high editorial content and standards on projects with outside vendors and consultants

● Track op-ed and content pitches, as well as external placements

● Work across departments and functions to ensure that all written material reflects the organization’s positions and branding

● Manage partnerships with external publishing platforms (e.g. Medium, Apple News, etc.) and manage the cross-posting process

● Manage freelance writers and assign content generation when appropriate

● Manage interns performing editorial tasks such as research, fact checking, and copy-editing

● Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office, using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance

● Commit to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts


 ● Minimum of five years of experience writing and editing, some of which was for nonprofit/advocacy purposes

● Outstanding writing and editing skills, proven record of publication

● Command of AP Style

● Strong verbal communications skills; ability to communicate with staff at all levels within the organization as well as with external media contacts, vendors and other organizations

● Collaborative work style and demonstrated ability to operate under pressure and within short deadlines

● Familiarity with political, legal, and news media landscapes.

● Experience working with digital content and blogs

● Familiarity with a wide variety of media outlets and journalists, and rapid-response moments

● Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills

● Ability to successfully navigate and thrive within a complex organization, working on established organizational priority issues as well as of-the-moment priorities

● Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects effectively and when needed, with urgency

● Commitment to the mission of the ACLU



 Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred. Advanced degree in a related field (e.g. journalism) preferred

  • Experience in a nonprofit organization of comparable complexity and scale, a news outlet, or a communications agency is preferred
