We are looking for a Senior Software Developer that displays a deep interest in and passion for technical design, development and problem solving, as well as someone who likes to analyze and build systems and help identify areas of improvement. 

Reporting directly to the Manager of Maps & Forecasting Technologies, this position will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining AccuWeather’s innovative MinuteCast®, weather visualization, and mapping capabilities. Leveraging modern technologies and architectural approaches, you will translate Product and meteorological needs into world-class, high performing code and map delivery systems. You will demonstrate skill in multiple technologies, solve technical problems, and collaborate with peers and stakeholders in an Agile-based environment to deliver both real-time forecast data and best of breed mapping experiences that cater to a global audience. 

Remote candidates in Canada and the United States are being considered for this mid-level opportunity.

Job Responsibilities 

  • Design and develop secure, high-quality code and unit test artifacts 
  • Review and contribute to technical specifications 
  • Design and develop modern map and weather visualization components with a focus on performance 
  • Research, implement, and continuously improve short term forecast technologies 
  • Develop solutions to enhance architecture used to ingest, process, and serve atmospheric and related data that are used to create both MinuteCast and maps 
  • Collaborate with Product, Technology, and Design to deliver innovative map and forecast visualization experiences 
  • Prototype, test, and iterate upon new features 
  • Influence peers and mentor junior team members 
  • Champion an enthusiastic, positive, work environment 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Job Qualifications 

  • BS/BA in related discipline with 5 or more years of experience in related field - OR - MS/MA and 3 or more years of experience in related field 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of modern programming and scripting languages such as C++, Java, and Python 
  • Deep knowledge in object-oriented computer programming methodologies 
  • Highly proficient in Qt development framework 
  • Experience with cloud-based architectures, CDNs, and caching 
  • Experience with hardware accelerated rendering (OpenGL) 
  • Highly proficient with Linux operating system 
  • Knowledge of SQL and geospatial principles with ability to interpret and analyze complex datasets 
  • Advocate for CI/CD with an automate-first mindset 
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-driven 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, along with demonstrated ability to be adaptable and accountable for decisions 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills 
  • Identifies areas of improvement within scope of work and contributes to enhancements 
  • Advocate for quality and adherence to security principles
