About the Organizer Position
To build 350.org’s base and membership, bring those members and groups into campaigns, and develop leadership. The organizer will use digital platforms and traditional organizing skills to recruit members, activists and leaders. The organizer will also support individuals and groups on leadership development, strategic planning, campaign development and organizing coordination.
We are looking for someone who is comfortable working remotely, both independently & on teams, and who is highly responsive, able to lead initiatives while also taking direction from others.
Responsibilities:
- Work as part of the U.S. Organizing Department to grow the scale, capacity and diversity of our activist network and mobilize the public around 350’s campaign objectives
- Use traditional organizing and digital platforms to coach local groups and volunteers on organizing skills, movement building, campaigns, mobilization and creative action, help to develop local group leadership, infrastructure and capacity.
- Assist in development of organizing plans for 350.org campaigns and actions; recruit local groups and partners to participate in campaigns, actions and mass mobilizations
- Bottom-lining one significant piece of campaign or organizing work.
- Recruit and coach volunteers to start new 350 local groups
- Foster and develop a deeper understanding and effort around intersectional, climate justice and allyship organizing in local groups and campaign teams
- Organize actions, events and campaigns
- Maintain a working knowledge and use of 350.org’s digital communication systems, CRM, Action Network, etc. tracking volunteer engagement and leadership development
- Support 350.org’s digital and communications teams with content creation as needed
- Understand 350.org’s history, campaigns and theory of social change, and keep current with basic climate science and policy
- Be part of the organizing team that is iterating and experimenting around a variety of organizing models and solutions.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in the nuts and bolts of organizing including recruiting, organizing, training, and supporting volunteer-led grassroots organizations and experience supporting the development of effective leaders.
- Campaign strategy, planning, and volunteer management experience.
- Proven ability to work effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, class, age, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds.
- Ability to adapt to and juggle evolving and competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Comfortable working independently as part of a remote team and communicating over phone, Slack, and messaging programs.
- Experience in base-building organizing.
- Experience in developing leadership with grassroots volunteers.
- Enthusiasm and ability to travel up to 25% of your staff time including a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Desired (but not required) skills and experiences
- Experience leading grassroots issue-based campaigns.
- Fluency in additional languages beyond English (particularly Spanish)
- Familiarity or excitement to learn digital organizing skills using new strategies and platforms.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent time management & organizational skills and ability to keep track of multiple projects and relationships.
Location: Remote within the United States in the following states CA, CO, GA, MD, MA, ME, MT, NY, NC, PA, UT, VT, VA, WI, NJ, CT, WA, or Washington, DC
