Job Description
Zscaler is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to be a founding member and lead the technical direction for a new software development team in Customer Reliability Engineering. In this role, you will drive the isolation/mitigation/resolution on customer escalations. You will also work on the feature development which will make the product easy to deploy and easy to troubleshoot across all Zscalers products and clouds.
Our mission is to build highly-available and performant distributed systems, capable of enabling quick issue identification, resolution, deflection, and prevention. Our ultimate goal is to ensure a smooth and seamless Zscaler experience for our customers.
As Principal Software Engineer, you will design, code and maintain such innovative platforms. You will partner with the team’s engineering and product managers to drive the vision. You will also coach junior members of the team on development best practices
We are looking for a talented, high-energy, team player to be part of a team developing a Firewall and Web proxy solution delivered as a service through the cloud.
- Contribute to the long-term vision for the team’s engineering platform, including data web proxy, firewall, load balancer, IPsec/VPN and core datapath.
- Lead the design and implementation of innovative distributed software platforms for debuggability, observability, and operability across all Zscalers products and clouds.
- Drive and maintain a high bar for engineering excellence to support 4-9s availability 24/7 in a full DevOps model, including driving investigations to determine root cause and implement solutions.
- Work cross-functionally with product management and distributed systems engineering teams to complete large scale projects with impact across the company
- Operate in an Agile development environment
- Support the team’s engineering excellence by performing code reviews and mentoring junior team members
- Motivate and champion a strong team culture
- Natural at writing unit tests and integrating into CI/CD
- Diagnosed complex customer issues and take ownership of issue resolution
- You will work on complex customer issues and drive the debugging, isolation, mitigation and resolution of them
- You will work on the strategic root cause analysis of the customer issues and come up with the changes in the product to address them.
- You will come up with the changes in the product to reduce the number of incoming escalations.
- 10+ years software development experience in large-scale commercial networking oriented applications
- Experience in Load balancers, IPS/IDS, Routers, Firewall products in multi-threading / multi-core / fault tolerant real-time embedded platforms.
- Expert-level programming skills in C/UNIX/RTOS
- Strong in fundamentals - TCP/IP, High performance Computing, Event based programming, Fault Tolerance etc.
- Familiar with complete software development cycle
- Self-starter, quick-learner, able to multi-task, and collaborate with others in a team environment
- BS/MS degree (Engineering/Computer Science)
- Experience with FreeBSD based networking solutions
- Knowledge of HTTP and web proxies
- Experience in Cloud based Networking solutions is plus
- Some small company/startup experience
- Experience on IPsec/VPN, Load Balancer is also desirable.

The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations and could be higher or lower based on a multitude of factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
The base salary range listed for this full-time position excludes commission/ bonus/ equity (if applicable) + benefits.
