As a Legal Counsel on the US Legal Team, you’ll work directly with key business stakeholders, leveraging your expertise in transactional and commercial matters, financial services regulations, and emerging technologies. You will receive guidance and support from senior members of the legal team, including the Deputy General Counsel, US, to navigate legal challenges and drive strategic business growth.

You’ll work directly with key business stakeholders to provide strategic legal guidance on a wide range of commercial and regulatory matters. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, US, you’ll leverage your expertise in transactional law, financial services regulations, and emerging technologies to help Zip scale responsibly.

You’ll also:

  • Review, draft, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including partnership agreements, vendor agreements, SaaS agreements, software license agreements, non-disclosure agreements, and data privacy agreements.
    Provide legal advice on federal and state financial regulations, including TCPA, Reg B, Reg Z, TILA, CCPA, and GLBA, with guidance from the Deputy General Counsel, US and VP of Compliance.
    Ensure all commercial agreements comply with Zip’s regulatory obligations and are structured for long-term operational success.
    Partner with commercial teams to assess strategic deals, ensuring contracts align with business goals and can be executed effectively.
    Advise on privacy-related matters and conduct privacy by design reviews, collaborating with Privacy Officers, legal colleagues and business stakeholders to ensure compliance with US and global data protection laws.
    Draft, update, and maintain privacy policies and notices for Zip’s products and business lines.
    Stay ahead of evolving privacy and data protection laws, regulations, and industry best practices, ensuring Zip’s compliance framework remains up-to-date.
    Review, draft, and negotiate data security and privacy provisions in vendor and partner agreements.
    Provide legal counsel and support on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, operational resilience and information management laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
    Develop a deep understanding of Zip’s products, services, and business operations to provide tailored, strategic legal advice.

What you’ll bring to the team 

  • 3-6 years of legal experience from a top-tier law firm and/or in-house counsel role, with a focus on commercial transactions, technology, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong background in negotiating and drafting technology and intellectual property-related agreements, including technology licensing, SaaS, cloud-based services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and other platform providers.
  • Prior experience advising on financial technology (fintech), consumer finance, or regulatory compliance is strongly preferred.
  • Deep understanding of federal and state regulations impacting fintech, payments, and consumer financial services.
  • Ability to deliver clear, concise, and pragmatic legal advice tailored to business objectives.
  • Strong risk assessment skills with the ability to provide commercially sound legal recommendations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to challenge decisions constructively, align stakeholders, and support the successful launch of new products and initiatives.

Zip is committed to a straightforward and transparent pay structure. The actual base salary will be determined by various individualized factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, experience, location, internal equity, as well as other objective business considerations.

The annual base Pay Range for this position is $104,000 - $140,000 USD. This range reflects our US national compensation (USN). Additional premium percentages may apply based on our tiered premium strategy.Subject to those same considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a bonus and/or equity awards, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. If hired, employees will be in an 'at-will position' and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
