The Firm

XTX Markets is an algorithmic trading firm that actively trades tens of thousands of instruments on over eighty venues with a daily volume of almost three hundred billion USD. We partner with counterparties, exchanges, and e-trading venues globally to provide consistent liquidity in the Equity, FX, Fixed Income, Commodity & Options markets, helping market participants throughout the world obtain the best prices in the various assets classes we cover.

We leverage the talent of the people who work here, modern computational techniques and state-of-the-art research infrastructure to analyse large data sets across markets quickly and efficiently, to maximise the effectiveness of our proprietary trading algorithms. The models that drive our trading strategies have evolved considerably over the last 10 years, from econometric methods that gave our company its name, to trees, to neural networks, to modern deep learning architectures. We are actively seeking new methods and ideas.

At XTX Markets technology is our business and we are a diverse organisation which attracts outstanding talent from across all industry backgrounds. We are focused on teamwork and our people collaborate on all aspects of the business, working openly and with respect for each other, our clients and the market. Our culture is non-hierarchical and one where everyone is valued. We strive for excellence in everything we do.

The Role

The Shared Engineering team at XTX Markets design, develop and maintain infrastructure and tools used by the firm at large, as well as specifically supporting our OTC trading and post-trade systems. We do not operate in technology silos at XTX, instead preferring to build small teams of multi-skilled engineers who work together on developing solutions and support the resulting systems.

We are looking for a network SRE who understands how networks function at a fundamental level, considers how problems can be solved using a broad array of tools and techniques and is not limited to using off-the-shelf or open-source components.

You may have been a network engineer, designer and/or architect and moved beyond core switching/routing into automating and monitoring everything possible by means of code. Fundamental computer science knowledge is important but being self-taught is just as valid as a degree.

Because we operate in a multi-skilled team, the role offers the opportunity to learn more about hardware, operating systems, the applications that run on them, Python/Go development, AWS and storage. In addition, you will work directly with teams responsible for developing and running our OTC trading and post-trade systems among others. Prior finance knowledge is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Support a high-performance trading business, dealing with outages, performing root cause analysis, and expanding the footprint.
  • Develop our network and datacentre infrastructure across multiple sites globally, making sure designs are consistent and simple.
  • Strive to simplify complex systems and automate so they can run uninterrupted.
  • Actively seek out new knowledge and ideas, understanding how/if they are applicable.
  • Work independently and manage your own projects and time

Essential Attributes

  • Strong network engineering and architecture skills.
  • Knowledge of switch internals, Ethernet and IP routing, including:
    • VPN and tunnelling protocols (IPSec, GRE, MPLS).
    • Routing protocols (BGP, OSPF/ISIS, LDP/RSVP-TE).
    • Working with multiple network vendors and network operating systems such as IOS-XE, NX-OS, EOS, Junos.
    • Firewall configuration and debugging.
  • Network automation, management and monitoring via code, working with different API transports (CLI-based, RESTCONF, NETCONF, gNMI).
  • Ability to write code (not just scripts) in a language such as Python or Go.
  • Can identify and mitigate network risks and issues.
  • Very comfortable at the Linux command line.
  • Demonstrable ability to take on complicated projects with a minimum of oversight.
  • Proven ability and interest to work outside of your comfort zone.

Desirable Attributes

We would not expect someone to have all the following skills or experience, but any knowledge would be welcome. More so, it gives an idea of the wide range of technologies we use, and you could expect to be involved with.

  • Tier 1 Internet service providers and internet exchanges.
  • Exchange and counterparty connectivity, precise timing infrastructure and latency reduction considerations.
  • Multicast (IGMP/PIM), IPsec tunnels, VPNs.
  • Metrics and log collection.
  • Monitoring tools.
  • Server hardware, Linux and bash scripting.
  • Containerisation technology.
  • Storage systems at the multi-PB scale.
  • Understanding of CI/CD development processes.
  • Cloud service providers.
