We are looking for a Design Manager Director who understands the intersection of emotion, human interaction, analysis, and design. This role is about seeing the way the team’s work, thought, and collaboration flows and guiding that dynamic to new heights. You’ll work daily with each senior designers & managers, and you should show steadfast dedication to their long-term growth and happiness.
The Magic Game Design team is a hardworking and vibrant team dedicated to making Magic fun, re-playable, and inviting. This role draws on your empathy, knowledge of people, process, design, and your enthusiastic thirst for building up versatile designers into an amazing team! You’ll be responsible for the growth and happiness of the individuals on the team and the team itself. Alongside the rest of Leadership Team, you'll help guide and grow the next generation of Magic designers and align the skills and mission of the Magic at large.
What You'll Do:
- Engage and grow – Conduct weekly one-on-ones and daily check-ins with the team. Actively listen, monitor, and improve the team's emotional and cultural landscape. Give direct guidance and feedback to help each designer grow.
- Hire and develop people – Work with managers and peers to identify present and future needs for hiring. Make sure each team follows the best hiring practices, including sourcing, tests, interview process, and selection criteria. Guide, train, and mentor new hires to ramp them up effectively into the role.
- Guide and improve workflow – Observe the dynamic and workflow of the team. Creatively evolve, adjust, and implement process to ensure success, harmony, and a balanced workload and vibrant culture.
- Measure and improve work – Partner with peers, managers, and designers to define standards for quality; create and perform measurements for qualitative and quantitative assessments of work and skills. Align with leaders to create opportunities for one-on-one training, peer training, and seminars to improve team performance.
- Workload planning – Work with project stakeholders to conduct an orchestra of 40+ game designers, supporting both teams and products.
- Partner with VP of Game Design – Collaborate with the Senior Design Director to help implement their content/design vision, and to make sure we’re implementing correctly and awesomely.
What You’ll Bring:
- 10+ years’ experience leading game development teams.
- People-centric and nurturing leadership skills, to deal with a wide variety of people and situations.
- Familiarity with Magic: The Gathering.
- Steadfast drive for fostering and growing design talent.
- Flexible, adaptable, creative mentality with a constant thirst for knowledge.
- Self-motivated curiosity, active listening, and a diverse toolbox of leadership skills.
