The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Controller reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. The Controller will be a key member of Wikimedia’s finance leadership team and partner to the CFO and the executive leadership team. You will report to the CFO and be a strategic and operational business partner who ensures the timely and accurate delivery of financial and statutory reporting requirements. You will also develop effective financial reporting processes, accounting systems, and internal controls to ensure the financial integrity of reported results. The ideal candidate is someone who can inspire and motivate their teams and partners, build internal alliances and drive continuous improvement. The candidate will also possess strong management and team leadership capabilities. The role is critical in ensuring the Foundation continues building world-class teams including accounting, grants administration and other related functions while partnering across the Foundation to ensure our systems and processes are running smoothly.

You are responsible for:

Accounting & controls

  • Manage all areas of accounting, both technical and transactional, including revenue (ASC606), consolidations, tax accounting, monthly close quarterly and year-end closings, including account reconciliations, accrual schedules and general journal entries, ensuring that reconciliations are performed accurately and on-time.
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely interpretation of GAAP accounting standards and adoptions.
  • Analyze and observe controls to ensure they are effectively designed and operating in compliance with policies.
  • Oversee the management of day-to-day operational needs, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, expense management, vendor management, and payroll processes.
  • Accountable for streamlining, maintaining & improving processes and internal controls.

Operational scale

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CFO and other senior leaders on accounting, financial reporting, and other key accounting and controls matters.
  • Proactively seek to improve processes and implement best-in-class solutions for scale and maturity.
  • Partner closely with FP&A, and CFO on quarterly board package preparation.
  • Accountable for the enhancement of operational effectiveness and efficiency of the Controllership organization.

Audit and compliance

  • Manage planning and execution of the annual financial audit and tax preparation and oversight.
  • Responsible and leverage external subject matter expert/services as needed for 401(K), Sales audits, tax return filings, and insurance policies to ensure timely and proper filings and compliance
  • Assume a critical role in our quarterly audit committee meetings


  • Accountable for the enhancement of operational effectiveness and efficiency of the Controllership organization.
  • Responsible for the management of our Investment Portfolio and Investment Policy to achieve our stated objectives.
  • Responsible for all Treasury functions, including cash flow forecasts.
  • Oversee other financial operating teams including the Grants Administration function
  • Inspire change and collaboration among a diverse and distributed team. Encourage the sharing of best practices and insights across all members of the team. Continuously develop and coach the team members.
  • Deliver business partnership with multiple executives and their teams within our organization.
  • Strong communicator and experienced in building partnerships with senior leadership teams regarding important accounting implications to business decisions.

Skills and Experience:

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller or Director of Accounting, with leadership roles
  • Active CPA or equivalent required
  • Experience in establishing and successfully implementing internal controls, accounting policies, and financial systems
  • Experience with audit and tax preparation processes
  • ERP system knowledge (Sage Intacct, Workday Adaptive and related), including moving from one ERP system to another
  • A willingness to roll up their sleeves and get in the details
  • Excellent communicator, both written and verbal, able to communicate complex concepts and risk factors to stakeholders and influence decision making
  • Experience setting up systems
  • Experienced business partner, skilled in building trust and inspiring others while ramping up in a new business and role
  • Excitement around navigating a growth-oriented, rapidly changing, and sometimes ambiguous environment
