The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for an Enterprise Risk Management principal to join our team. The position reports to the Chief Financial Officer. The ERM Principal will facilitate the next stage of development of our new ERM program, expand and integrate the usage of our GRC tool to create a holistic ERM program with the leadership of the organization. 

This position will evolve our capabilities related to identifying and managing the risks we face, and increase awareness across all Wikimedia Foundation teams regarding the importance, role and components of effective risk management. This role will facilitate scenario planning and collaborate with leadership to develop and prepare us for a state of ‘readiness’ for our top risks and opportunities at the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF).  This position will require a combination  of technical and programmatic expertise, and the ability to work with subject matter experts to jointly develop and present risk mitigation strategies. 

This is a highly visible role providing the opportunity to work with key stakeholders across the organization. This position is not a people manager. This position will require curiosity, experienced risk training and education as well as excellent communication to create and develop risk champions within each of our impact and functional areas. This role must exhibit continuous learning, and the curiosity to consistently delve into the unique and standard risk within our technical, business and community impacts. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day execution of Enterprise Risk Management planning and activities
  • Develop and update ERM tools and resources to support risk assessment, risk management and risk reporting, such as: surveys, workshop agendas, exercises, worksheets, training materials, risk reports, and other narratives and visuals that explain our process and approach
  • Serve as WMF’s in-house subject matter expert on Enterprise Risk Management
  • Provide hands-on SME guidance and support to help colleagues and teams identify, ‘unpack,’ and take action to reduce the likelihood and/or potential downside consequences of future risk events
  • Implement risk assessment threat modeling exercises, identifying the proper controls are being maintained and the control activities are being effective in reducing inherent risk.
  • Champion awareness and understanding of the key concepts in Enterprise Risk Management, such as key risk indicators, risk appetite, and risk-aware decision-making, and help leaders and teams apply these concepts in their day-to-day work 
  • Experience with focused risk and gap assessments to support identification, documentation  and tracking of impact area risks including technology, reputation, operational and strategic risks. 
  • Prepare and deliver high quality executive level risk management reports to senior management, management and board level committees. 

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field 
  • Minimum of ten(10) years working in a responsible role in a risk management function or department, or in a role with leadership responsibility for risk management or ERM
  • Possess a curious mind, take initiative, be accountable, maintain integrity, maintain credibility, develop and collaborate well with others as a team.
  • Demonstrated experience in risk management or ERM
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with functional area leadership in threat modeling and contingency planning exercises and follow through 
  • Technical capabilities and understanding to manage and work with SME’s in technical threat modeling. 
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing GRC tools and platforms 
  • Project management/leadership and facilitation experience
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, including preparing presentations
  • Strong time management skills and demonstrated experience completing projects from the conceptual to execution stage 
  • Strong analysis and problem-solving skills 
  • Team player who believes in generously sharing and soliciting information with others. 
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently.
  • Strong decision-making, follow-up, follow-through, priority setting, and negotiating skills are required.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced, dynamic and changing environment while providing top level attention to detail, and ensuring work is complete.
