Hi, we’re Who Gives A Crap! We make eco-friendly toilet paper (as well as tissues and paper towels) and donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets for the 2 billion people in need. We love doing good, and we happen to be exceptionally good at it too! To date, we’ve donated over AUD$8.3 million (roughly USD$5.9 million) to fund sanitation projects around the globe. 

Our team is made up of over 120 amazing humans in Australia, the Philippines, China, the US and Europe and we’re working hard to reach our ambitious goals to create the greatest impact possible – for people and the planet. How ambitious you ask? Well, it involves increasing our annual donation 10-fold in the next couple of years to get closer to our mission – toilets and clean water for all!

A bit about the role

We’re in the process of rethinking our digital experience, and we need your help. As our Product Design Director, you’ll ensure we deliver a seamless and best-in-class onsite experience that works beautifully for our customers and our business. Reporting to our Head of Digital Product, you’ll support the product roadmap from ideation to delivering new design solutions that help build the future of our online experience. You’ll work elbow-to-elbow with our Front End Developer, Sr. Product Manager, and our agency partner to validate the feasibility of your work and ensure world-class user experience. 

From establishing a design system, visualizing the future of our end-to-end user experience, and creating wireframes and high-fidelity mock-ups, you will level-up our product design process while ensuring inclusivity and collaboration. You'll also get to dig into insights and uncover opportunities we didn’t see before, turning those opportunities into delightful design solutions. And you’re always keeping your finger on the pulse of best-in-class Design and industry trends and continually analyze our competitive landscape to stay ahead of the curve and proactively find opportunities to improve the experience

While we’re hiring this role for our Los Angeles hub, we still want to hear from talented remote design directors as long as you’re up for dedicating yourself to the PST timezone from afar.

If you worked here this past month here are some things you might have been involved in:

  • Shared a slickkkkk looking presentation to the whole company in our annual virtual IRL unveiling upcoming product design sneak peeks that resulted with our entire team unmuting themselves to cheer enthusiastically 
  • Contributed to our quarterly planning process to nut out the work we have ahead of us, aligning on our cross-functional priorities against our annual strategy
  • Spearhead a project to rethink how we manage Gift Cards, getting your hands dirty and experimenting with new Shopify Apps and deciding how to best move forward
  • Participated enthusiastically in an all-hands, winner-takes-all virtual roshambo contest
  • Won a webby plus some virtual shout-outs on social via one of your personal design heroes  
  • Collaborated with engineering to prototype a new in-home device that helps us learn from our customers and help them seamlessly reorder
  • Partnered with our People & Culture team to create a roadmap for hiring additional Product Design roles over the next few quarters
  • Signed into and contributed to daily virtual sprints, standups, retrospectives, and other ceremonies to keep the team aligned and focused
  • You and your team created easter eggs and moments of delight into the site that are so enjoyable, they go viral and are featured on design blogs
  • Recorded yourself shaking and waving your way through Zoom with your Digital Product teammates that resulted in a punny and heart-warming IRL video recap that may or may not have been sung by Celine Dion

You are super curious and empathy-driven, are highly resourceful (think scrappy in the best way possible), and are keen on collaboration. But that’s not all…

You are big on user experience

You recognize amazing product design comes from thinking deeply about people and processes, not just pixels, and you love getting your hands dirty with user research. You know how to talk to users to understand their needs, are obsessed with the customer experience and naturally empathize with your product’s users.

You are a design geek

And you have the product chops and rock-solid portfolio book to prove it. Your notebook is brimming with out-of-the-box approaches (that worked in testing) that you’re excited to sink your teeth into, and are passionate about creating beautiful, functional design grounded in solid research. You find yourself dreaming in Sketch, Figma, InVision, and Creative Suite. You also know perfection and when not to pursue it. 

You are an expert collaborator

Your work touches every part of the business and you are highly collaborative across all teams, hubs, and levels of Who Gives A Crap. You encourage open communication and advocate for shared positive outcomes. People trust you and you’re able to build a reputation as an expert as well as a teammate. You’re able to clearly define a value proposition and seamlessly articulate it, generating support and buy-in from both key stakeholders team members. 

You naturally level-up those around you
