You are an experienced and collaborative engineering leader, an empathetic manager, and a strong communicator. How You’ll Contribute

As the leader of the engineering team responsible for building WellSaid Labs’ enterprise-grade SaaS application, Studio, you will work closely with our product and engineering leadership to instill best practices, execute the product roadmap, mentor our teammates, and participate in the sprint process as an advocate for fixing bugs, right-sizing technical work, and addressing technical debut.  

In your day-to-day, you'll work on:

  • Team Leadership: Provide strong leadership and mentorship to a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
  • Technical Strategy: Collaboratively define and execute the technical roadmap for our cloud SaaS products, aligning with the company's overall business objectives and priorities.
  • Architecture and Design: Collaboratively drive the design and architecture of scalable, secure, and resilient cloud-based solutions, leveraging best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure the quality and reliability of software deliverables through effective testing strategies, code reviews, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Performance Optimization: Optimize the performance and efficiency of our Studio application, identifying bottlenecks and implementing solutions to enhance scalability and responsiveness.
  • Security and Compliance: Uphold the highest standards of security and compliance within our cloud SaaS environment, proactively addressing vulnerabilities and maintaining adherence to industry regulations.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with product management, the API and Infrastructure team, the ML team, and other cross-functional teams to prioritize features, resolve technical issues, and deliver timely releases.
  • Resource Planning and Management: Manage resource allocation, budgeting, and staffing for the Studio team, ensuring optimal utilization of talent and resources.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive a culture of continuous improvement within the engineering organization, implementing processes, tools, and methodologies to enhance productivity, efficiency, and innovation.
  • Delivery: Iteratively deliver the product roadmap by working with the team to break down big initiatives into smaller tasks for delivery on time and within estimates.
  • Partner and support: Work one-on-one with team members to meet their needs, giving team members regular and constructive feedback. You’ll show concern and success for the well-being of others and do what you can to support people. 
  • Player-Coach: Work side-by-side with the team to use your knowledge to help the team solve problems and keep your skills current. Conduct design and code reviews with the team.
  • Educate: Adapt and train the team in best practices for software engineering. This includes various engineering philosophies, including testing, documentation, readability, defensibility, etc. 
  • Drive Customer Focus: Help build customer empathy by introducing, discussing, and reviewing customer use cases. 
  • Embody  WSL Values: Surface and lead discussions on the ethics and social impact of the team's work.


What We’re Looking For 

To thrive in this role, you have experience leading the development of a mature enterprise-grade SaaS product/platform, building a solid team that enjoys working together to build solutions to customer pain points, and a genuine care for employees as people that meet or exceed your passion for technology. 

 Ideally, you also have some combination of the following: 

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, focusing on cloud-based SaaS applications.
  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership or management role, preferably leading engineering teams in a SaaS environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and related services (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda, Kubernetes).
  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies, tools, and best practices, including Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, and product management.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, and make data-driven decisions.
  • You are flexible and capable of working with a diverse team with various communication styles and needs. You are empathic and supportive.
  • You create equitable processes across the entire employee lifecycle. You are particularly mindful of addressing the needs of marginalized people.
  • Experience with accessibility, security, and compliance standards (e.g., SOC 2, GDPR) is a plus.
  • Experience building a platform for an AI/ML model is a plus.

As a startup, we strive to be externally competitive with companies at a similar size and stage, and internally fair in our pay practices. The hiring salary range for this role is $180,000 - $200,000  and represents the target offer range given the scope and experience expectations for this role.
