Vox is a user’s guide to the news produced by the beat reporters, subject-matter experts, and editors who know it best. We’re looking for a policy editor who can direct our coverage of domestic policy, a signature area for Vox.
The policy editor will run a team of reporters covering beats including health care, immigration, and economics. To do that, the policy editor will need to know policy cold themselves. The ideal candidate will be comfortable dissecting CBO reports, assigning angles out of the latest Piketty/Saez paper, and coaching writers through on-the-ground dispatches, laying bare how the decisions made in Washington are affecting communities across America.
They will also need to believe, in their bones, that policy journalism is interesting, and even the most complex and weedsy topics can be made clear and interesting for a large audience. And they will need to be passionate about Vox’s core mission of explaining bills, white papers, executive orders, and congressional procedure.
At Vox, editors collaborate. They brainstorm with colleagues around big stories in order to cover them from multiple angles. Top candidates for the policy editor position should be excited to work with other department editors, like the politics and foreign editors, to add breadth and depth to our coverage of major news events. And they should be eager to team up with the social, visual, and video teams to experiment with new formats and platforms. Working closely with other editors and collaborating with our multimedia and visual storytellers should be considered integral parts of this role.
This is a great opportunity for a creative editor passionate about explaining policy news.
2+ years experience editing policy, Washington or other relevant national news
Demonstrated ability to assign stories that pop online
Demonstrated interest in explanatory journalism
Interest in experimenting with new platforms and formats
