The Verge is seeking a talented and passionate Culture Editor to join our editorial team. As the Culture Editor, you and your team will find, analyze, criticize, and synthesize the latest in pop culture, from the latest Marvel blockbuster to the YouTube channel of the world’s most famous toddler to an indie game made by a young woman in her dorm room.
Our team covers film, television, video games, web culture, books, music, and interactive art through the lens of technology. We spotlight genre fiction, because we feel sci-fi, horror, and the avant garde can and often do steer the direction of storytelling, but also tech, science, and politics. Because we live at the intersection of culture and tech, we seek to understand how media and technology influence, impede, and empower one another.
Our goal is to introduce the future to the reader, whether that’s an augmented reality headset, an innovative Japanese reality show on Netflix, or a political movement birthed in forums or on social media feeds.
Our ideal candidate would bring to the team, along with strong editorial leaderships skills, expertise in internet culture. Along with building up internet culture coverage, the Culture Editor will steer the channel’s day-to-day direction and its longterm tone. We are looking for an editor who can help our writers tell smart, creative, engaging stories, and inspire them to meet their full potential.
The ideal candidate will have:
Skills in leadership and delegation
A willingness to prioritize editor responsibilities above personal reporting
A deep passion for and expertise in internet culture and media
Ability to find, assign, and follow up on compelling stories
A track record of assigning and editing stories that perform online
Experience in managerial positions
If this describes you, please submit: a cover letter that includes links to three stories you've assigned and edited, links to three stories you have written, a resume, and three story ideas you’d assign this week if you ran the Culture section at The Verge.
We prefer this position to be based in NYC; however, we're open to other locations for the right candidate. Please let us know in your cover letter if you're unable to perform this position in NYC.
