Why this role matters

Vonage API is growing fast and is always working on new products and for that reason we are looking for an Application Engineer, who will support a variety of production and internal facing systems dealing with high volumes of transactions. This role is focused on resolving complex technical issues that are escalated from our support team.


What you will do

  • Act as the Engineering escalation point for the SMS and Voice operations team in the event of application issues
  • Build tools and scripts to automate tasks, improve business processes and monitor/maintain the production environment e.g. data recovery, migration, and message replay
  • Actively observe production systems to early-identify issues
  • Work autonomously to research and identify patterns or causes of issues
  • Create documentation to improve team processes

What you will bring

Essential experience:

  • Experience in a similar engineering/operations role
  • Experience of building/debugging software, and analysing application/system log files
  • A deep understanding of UNIX/Linux systems and basic sysadmin abilities
  • Understanding of networking and related services (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, FTP, etc.)
  • Comfortable working with low level packet traces to troubleshoot

Good experience to have:

  • Python or Java coding ability with a focus on clean & readable code (other languages will be considered)
  • Familiarity with REST
  • Familiarity with RDBMSs (MySQL), SQL queries and data schemas
  • A good understanding of server-side software built out of many interacting components
  • An understanding of concurrency and scalability and multi-threading
  • Previous experience with AWS and Terraform
  • Previous experience working with highly available systems, extremely high volume platforms, microservices, docker or messaging systems a huge plus
