VICE started in 1994 as a newsprint monthly in Montreal and is now a global youth media company that includes print, events, music, online, television, and feature film divisions that operates in over 30 countries. Life is VICE’s health, wellness, and lifestyle section.
Vice Life is looking for a motivated and talented writer to create reported and service pieces on at least one, and ideally more than one, of the following beats:
- Health, wellness, and self-care
- Sex and relationships
- Work, money, and personal finance
The candidate should have a proven ability to report and synthesize facts and science with emerging trends, an aim to guide the conversation around their beats, and a sincere desire to help our audience make sense of their bodies, lives, and interactions with the world. They should have an approachable voice and a flair for explaining tricky or complex concepts in a grounded way to a casual audience.
Staff writers with Vice Life are expected to develop high-impact coverage across a beat or set of beats. They are expected to synthesize reporting, explanations, and narratives in formats that range from blogs, to longer-lead reports and service pieces, to feature work. Staff writers must be attentive to their impact within their coverage areas, and ideally can be nimble and open to adjusting their approach and tone for a variety of coverage styles.
An ability to find insightful, unique, or otherwise exclusive stories is essential to success in the role. The ideal candidate has an understanding of what makes a Vice story, and also will bring a fresh perspective to help us in our mission of explaining the world around us.
A general knowledge of the wide range of topics the Vice Health, Drugs, and Money verticals cover is a must. Candidates must also be excited about telling stories in multimedia formats and should be able to report stories that could translate well to visual or video formats across social media. Most importantly, we're looking for an energetic, hardworking writer who is committed to doing the forward-thinking work Vice is known for.
