Motherboard is looking for a motivated and talented reporter to cover the tech labor and unionization movements, and the open source community that has grown as an alternative to Big Tech's monopolies.
The candidate should have a proven ability to report and publish scoops, a desire to source up at Silicon Valley's largest companies, and an understanding of organized labor and organizing campaigns. They should also have strong writing and source management and protection skills.
Staff writers at Motherboard are expected to develop high-impact coverage across a beat or set of beats. Staff writers are expected to develop sourcing and readership in their beat with a calculated approach to format and reporting, with a mix of blogging, longer-lead reporting, and enterprise work. Staff writers must also be extremely sensitive to how well their stories are resonating within their beats, as well as ensuring that they are not ignoring key issues in their sphere of coverage.
This is a role designed to help ensure Motherboard has a topic area covered in an authoritative enough fashion that we stand out above the fray. An ability to find insightful, unique, or otherwise exclusive stories is essential to success in the role. The ideal candidate has an understanding of what makes a Motherboard story, and also will bring a fresh perspective to help us in our mission of explaining the futures around us.
The candidate should be able to break news and comment on ongoing news events in their beat, with the goal of having these stories ladder up into longer investigative and narrative features.
A general knowledge of the wide range of topics Motherboard covers is a must, but the ideal candidate will also have specialization in labor reporting. Candidates must also be excited about telling stories in multimedia formats and should be able to report stories that could also work as podcasts or videos. Candidates should be willing to delve deep into the communities that Motherboard covers.
Most importantly, we're looking for an energetic, hardworking journalist who is committed to doing the forward-thinking reporting Motherboard is known for.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- ongoing news reporting and scoop generation in a beat
- finding angles on breaking news stories and blogging
- features and investigative reporting as discussed with an editor
- working with other staff writers and editors on theme weeks and reporting projects
- video and podcast hosting as appropriate
- Strong writing voice
- Ability to write and report posts quickly as needed
- Excellent reporting, source management, and protection skills
- An interest in investigative reporting and learning investigative reporting techniques (such as FOIA, working with leaked documents, protecting anonymous and sensitive sources)
- Well-versed in encrypted messaging techniques
- Background in reporting and newsgathering
- Professional experience using a CMS
- A previous position on a website’s editorial staff
