Role Overview 

The Packaging Engineer will work closely with suppliers to optimize packaging design, balancing reliability, customer experience, and cost-effectiveness. This role involves identifying opportunities to reduce transportation and fulfillment costs, minimize product damage during transit, and enhance the unboxing experience for customers. The ideal candidate will also focus on sustainable packaging solutions to align with future regulations and market trends. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Packaging Optimization: 

  • Collaborate with suppliers to evaluate and improve packaging designs for reliability, cost efficiency, and customer satisfaction. 
  • Identify and implement opportunities to reduce Amazon FBA fees and optimize container loading for lower transportation costs. 
  • Design and test innovative packaging solutions, including molded pulp and other custom materials, for high-volume products. 

Sustainability & Compliance: 

  • Develop eco-friendly and sustainable packaging options to align with anticipated regulatory requirements. 
  • Research and recommend sustainable materials and designs that maintain or improve cost efficiency. 

Damage Reduction & Customer Experience: 

  • Analyze return data for products with high transport damage or malfunction rates and implement packaging improvements to reduce these issues. 
  • Enhance the customer unboxing experience by incorporating user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing designs that improve product reviews and ratings. 

Cost Analysis & Collaboration: 

  • Work with the Product Cost Engineer to perform total cost of ownership (TCO) analyses, balancing material costs with transportation and storage efficiencies. 
  • Assess trade-offs between packaging options, such as lightweight materials versus durability, or flat-packing versus pre-assembled designs. 

Supplier Development: 

  • Identify and develop partnerships with sub-suppliers for innovative packaging solutions, focusing on scalability and customization. 
  • Conduct supplier audits to ensure packaging materials and processes meet quality and performance standards. 

Testing & Quality Assurance: 

  • Establish and oversee packaging testing protocols to evaluate strength, durability, and environmental impact. 
  • Continuously monitor and improve packaging performance to reduce defects and damages in transit. 

 

Qualifications 

Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field. 
  • 3-5 years of experience in packaging design, development, or engineering, preferably in an e-commerce or manufacturing environment. 
  • Proven track record of implementing cost-saving and sustainable packaging solutions. 

Technical Skills: 

  • Strong understanding of packaging materials, design processes, and testing protocols. 
  • Knowledge of Amazon FBA packaging requirements and transportation logistics. 
  • Proficiency in CAD software or packaging design tools (e.g., ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks). 

Soft Skills: 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to innovation. 
  • Strong collaboration and communication abilities for cross-functional teamwork. 
  • Analytical mindset with a focus on data-driven decision-making. 

Other Requirements: 

  • Business Proficient English Language Skills 
  • Willingness to travel to suppliers and factories as needed.
