About the Position

We are looking for a talented, passionate and mission-driven Director of Engineering

to come on as a driving force behind the organization’s technology strategy. As a member of the Engineering leadership team and reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, this person will lead engineering efforts for Understood’s community applications and will be responsible for helping to build scalable products, teams, and processes.

The successful candidate must have technical and operational chops working across teams to achieve objectives and execute projects, especially as the organization considers new products, categories and audiences.

What You’ll Do

  • Develops and deploys new strategies for building a high velocity, high performance development organization in line with our emerging customer needs
  • Supports technical innovation and leads the creation, continual refinement, and active enforcement of our development standards in order to ensure that our technology can be leveraged as a sustainable competitive advantage
  • Participates in staff recruitment, performance assessments, training, and career development. Responsible for all headcount planning and personnel evolution for multiple areas of the engineering organization
  • Understands and practices agile software development and management.
  • Ensures team software is monitored via SLO/SLI
  • Proactive in identifying and clearing roadblocks for the team
  • Willing and able to jump in to help debug and triage critical systems as needed
  • Researches new technologies to stay abreast of industry trends and standards
  • Contributes to architecture by asking the right questions to ensure architecture matches business needs for the area
  • As necessary, manages vendor and external relationships for their organization, and participates in the budgeting process
  • Creates an organization that understands how to balance technical debt vs business goals
  • Collaborates across functional areas to define, prioritize and ensure implementation of specific innovations to improve technical functionality in support of business needs, efficiencies and revenue
  • Able to communicate technical concepts to business stakeholders as well as communicate business objectives to the technical team
  • Leverages past experience and uses strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with all stakeholders including customers, senior management and other business leaders
  • Contributes to architectural decisions with a focus on the product and business needs now and in the future, knows the right questions to ask to help the team get to the right decision
  • In partnership with the VP, Engineering, product leads, and other business stakeholders, translates the high-level strategic vision into a clear and actionable technology roadmap

Experience, Knowledge and Technical Skills

  • 4+ years of experience managing software engineering managers (mentoring staff/ principal engineers, setting technical direction, etc.)
  • 7+ years of relevant industry experience in cloud-based web/mobile development
  • Experience building and deploying iOS and Android apps at scale
  • Fluency in React Native
