Senior Scientist/Scientist, NGS R&D

This role can be filled at the Sr Scientist or Scientist level, depending on experience.

The R&D team at Twist is searching for a curious, thoughtful, and driven individual with excellent lab hands to help us develop new products and applications in the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) space.  Leveraging our silicon-based, massively-parallel DNA synthesis platform, you will conduct laboratory studies to develop, improve, and troubleshoot our latest NGS products.  In this position, you will have the opportunity to work on leading-edge products for genomics, diagnostics, and personalized medicine.

First and foremost, we are looking for someone with a scientist’s mindset.  Creativity, critical thinking, careful experimental execution, and a desire to learn deep technical details are a must.

Ideal candidates for this position are dedicated team players, capable of assisting with several projects at once, who can be a part of a strong collaboration between multiple innovative and encouraging individuals. Up-and-coming scientists that demonstrate self-motivation and enthusiasm for scientific bench work are strongly encouraged.

Your work will be mainly at the bench; however, you will have the opportunity to use high-throughput robotic instruments as well as coding and bioinformatics tools to expand your expertise.  You will work alongside and learn from some of the best scientists and bioinformaticians in the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of custom DNA-based applications and tests, focusing on next-generation sequencing (NGS) targeted enrichment products.
  • Independently plan and execute experiments, analyze data, and leverage findings to enhance NGS products and applications.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives to optimize production workflows for NGS kits and Target Enrichment Panel lines, ensuring increased efficiency, quality, and scalability.
  • Innovate and refine commercial kits and components, including formulations and protocols.
  • Collaborate closely with bioinformaticians for data analysis and coordinate with internal Twist teams, including product management, manufacturing, and QC, on cross-functional projects.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and ISO 13485 guidelines.

What You’ll Bring to the Team:

  • Extensive expertise in NGS methods, products, and applications, with practical experience in large-scale genomic techniques, including whole genome sequencing, exome sequencing, target enrichment, RNA sequencing, and single-cell sequencing.
  • Proficient in bioinformatics and bioinformatics tools, including genome alignment, mapping, variant calling, and annotation, with the ability to conduct analyses and effectively communicate requirements to bioinformaticians.
  • Proficient in molecular biology techniques, including DNA purification, DNA quantification, and PCR.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with strong proficiency in both written and spoken English, and a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Detail-oriented and efficient in fast-paced environments, with demonstrated technical expertise and scientific creativity.
  • Skilled in independently solving complex, diverse problems using innovative thinking and collaborative approaches.
  • Ability to influence the trajectory of projects by offering actionable solutions that are adopted by core teams and stakeholders.
  • Independently manages routine work and seeks guidance on new assignments as needed.
  • Leads the creation of technical and supporting documents for both internal and external use.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's degree with 5-7 years of experience or a PhD with 2-5 years of post-graduate experience in a related field such as molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, genomics, or chemistry.
  • Experience with an NGS company and in developing products for commercial launch is highly desirable.
  • Coding skills in R, Python or equivalent languages.
  • Experience with liquid handling systems and automation.

Race & Ethnicity Definitions

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
