This position will help us innovate further and make it effortless for all organizations to create delightful voice experiences that make every one of their customers feel valued and understood. 

We are looking for an inspiring Engineering Leader that can lead global engineering teams in developing, innovating and launching products at scale. We need someone to partner with product management on roadmap development, articulating the voice story internally and externally, shaping a long-term strategy and vision, and driving execution.

As the most senior engineering leader on the voice team, you will build alliances with partner teams and champion operational excellence throughout the company. You will continue to build world-class teams that can build quickly and intelligently.

You will report to and serve as a business partner to the Voice Business Unit General Manager and support the 2nd highest grossing product line at Twilio.


In this role, you’ll:

  • WEAR THE CUSTOMER’S SHOES and deliver engineering plans and architecture for our voice products. 
  • You will give an experimentation framework to our product leaders to ensure we are able to deliver the best possible solutions for our customers.
  • EMPOWER OTHERS and help employees grow through career development, coaching, and mentoring while guiding senior contributors to maximize their potential. You'll provide a clear path for progression through personal development plans, defining goals, performing evaluations, and collaborating with employees on their objectives.  Most of all, ensure employees are having fun with their work.
  • BE AN OWNER and own, operate, and maintain your team’s services. Employ Agile methodologies to continuously deliver value to customers. Enhance and maintain a rotating on-call incident escalation and response process.
  • DRAW THE OWL as a leader of a critical part of Twilio’s senior engineering team and contribute to Twilio’s overall voice strategy
  • NOT SETTLE and collaborate on roadmaps with Product Managers, Architects, and Tech Leads to ensure the organization has clear direction and priorities related to performance metrics that track business performance.
  • BE INCLUSIVE and act as an ambassador for Twilio, recruiting and motivating top talent.

  • 10+ years of people management experience, building and leading high performance diverse engineering teams in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Experience with large high throughput low latency distributed cloud-based systems.
  • Hired and mentored engineers, architects and engineering managers.
  • A data driven approach to decision making with clear understanding of good input and output metrics and the mechanisms to support them.
  • Passion for engineering hygiene and operational excellence.  Demonstrated experience leading an engineering organization that delivers.  
  • The ability to help your team understand and stay focused on the customer and business outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to be personable yet persistent.  You are able to articulate the “why” for a team’s priorities and the customer impact.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. 


  • Experience aligning business and engineering initiatives to promote technical excellence, innovation and engagement.
  • Solid understanding of agile methodologies, continuous integration, and test and deployment automation.
  • The ability to distill complex and ambiguous situations into aligned priorities with actionable plans for your team. 
  • Ability to continuously improve quality through metrics-based defect tracking, coaching and development of engineering team members.
  • Master’s degree in computer science
  • 5+ years of experience building telecom/real-time cloud-based communications systems


This role will be based in our San Francisco or Denver office. 

Approximately 15% travel is anticipated.

  • The estimated pay range for this role, based in Colorado, is $200,880 - $251,100. Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Twilio's equity plan.

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state. This role is also eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.
