Team Rubicon International (TRI) is seeking International Volunteer Field Leaders with technical experience in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) to help expand and strengthen Team Rubicon's mission to respond to communities around the world during a humanitarian crisis. 

As a TRI WASH Specialist, you may be expected to work in challenging, austere, and sometimes insecure environments. You must be physically capable and mentally resilient to navigate moderate to long distances on foot, work without access to electricity or basic technologies, and procure potable water. Inherent to this position is the willingness to deploy on a deliberately planned humanitarian operation or in response to a natural or man-made disaster in potentially hazardous environments on short notice. 

WASH SPECIALIST DUTIES

  • Serve as a technical lead on rapid response WASH activities; provide subject matter expertise in support of WASH. 
  • Assess and navigate potential recovery activities that TRI Programs can be involved in.  
  • Provide in-person training on TRI’s WASH capability to volunteers and persons living in vulnerable communities. 
  • Conduct or provide reach-back support of rapid assessment of needs in the affected population to determine priorities, immediate activities, and required resources following an event. 
  • Coordinate with other team members and TR staff to ensure a rapid, proportionate, integrated and effective response. 
  • Ensure compliance of all activities in accordance with TRI policies, relevant US laws, and international regulations. 
  • Adhere to the Code of Conduct, maintain humanitarian principles, and respect humanitarian law at all times.  
  • Ensure gender, children, and vulnerable population protection is considered throughout all TRI WASH activities. 

EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND

Required:

  • Academic background in WASH-related studies and/or 1+.years of technical experience in WASH activities. 
  • Preference given to applicants with degrees in WASH-related studies (Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health, Health Science, etc.) 
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of best practices for water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion in emergency response and short-term recovery programs. 
  • Familiarity with current SPHERE standards and guidelines for WASH in emergency response and recovery; experience with international WASH requirements. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and background in cultural competence, working with translators, community mobilization and engagement. 
  • Experience in coordinating with and providing guidance on working with the WASH cluster mechanism. 

Preferred:

  • Experience working with volunteer-based organizations. 
  • Fluency in Spanish, French, or Arabic. 
  • Experience in emergency and early recovery phases; assessments, design and delivery of effective water supply, and hygiene promotion interventions in humanitarian and development contexts. 
  • Has capacity to make accurate self-assessments, particularly in high stress and high security contexts. 
  • Demonstrated competence in conducting needs assessments, developing WASH strategies, and implementing WASH programs throughout the emergency response and recovery phases 
  • A thorough and demonstrated understanding of humanitarian contexts (including natural disasters, conflict, and complex emergencies) and humanitarian principles 
  • Strong awareness of gender and protection issues in humanitarian interventions, specifically in WASH programming.

TRI VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

  • This volunteer position is remote but requires the ability to travel 2-3 times a year to Team Rubicon Headquarters in Los Angeles or deploy internationally. 
  • Must have, or are willing to acquire, internationally required immunizations to include COVID-19 vaccine. 
  • Must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • Required Work Hours: 6 hours per month.

Must also possess the ability to understand local medical/health service needs quickly, including the need to support vulnerable populations such children, older persons, pregnant women, postpartum mothers, and people with mental and/or physical disabilities, etc.
  • Empathetic: Ability to understand the impact of disasters on the health and wellbeing of populations, acknowledge the importance of population health maintenance, and the needs of affected populations and those with chronic medical problems in disaster-settings.
  • Culturally Adept: International operations require individuals that are knowledgeable and understanding of cultures, customs or traditions that are unlike their own.
