The Opportunity

Join our Metering Services Team as a Meter Technician where you will program, test, install, and repair a wide variety of meters, communications devices, and associated circuitry.  You will flex your skills in the areas of power production, meter programming, and ensuring meter data validity.

The Team

You will report to our Metering Manager and work collaboratively with our team of 15-20 Metering Technicians, Engineers, and Data Analysts, as well as collaborate across the organization with our technology, design, project delivery and service teams.

The Environment

This is a distributed team based locally to our headquarters and field offices.  You will have the option of an office-based or flex-based workplace in our Folsom, CA office. 

Travel to client sites is required on a frequent basis (up to 75%.)  Onsite work will have varying exposure to all types of weather, electricity, hazardous surfaces, ladders, heights, ditches, poor lighting, hostile and high crime areas.

Growth & Development

Meter Engineering is the heart of SCADA. You will work on in depth power control schemes, while implementing controls logic for the metering of some the largest green energy projects in the world.  You will apply power engineering principles and calculations for the latest technologies being employed.

Your Key Contributions

  • Review schematic, single-line, and three-line drawings and provide updates to the design and production teams as needed.
  • Specify tests, maintain, and verify accurate installation of all types of revenue metering equipment.
  • Calibrate single-phase and poly-phase self-contained and transformer rated meters, up to and including 480-volt meters.
  • Program electronic power analyzers, generate reports and analyze technical data to interpret results for customer power quality problems.
  • Train meter technicians to install, maintain, repair, replace meters and metering equipment for all types of electric metering installations.
  • Train technicians to wire meter sockets, test switches, transformer rated metering in the field for electric meters. Burden tests current transformer and potential transformer meter circuits.
  • Mentor and train technicians to program electronic meters of various manufacturers.
  • Mentor and train technicians to perform meter reads and record meter readings accurately.
  • Record test data, complete service orders, and maintain Meter Shop Database.
  • Performs technical computations to mathematically determine watts, vars, power factor quantities and develops diagrams.
  • Provide input and guidance to the Safety Committee to ensure all technicians are trained and prepared to perform their job functions in high voltage electrical environments.

Traits for Success

  • 3+ years' experience in metering theory, programming and testing.
  • 3+ years' field experience working on self-contained and transformer rated electronic energy meters.
  • Clear Federal Criminal Background screen and security clearance.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record, travel is required.
  • Ability to test and repair single, poly-phase, and CAISO approved meters.
  • Familiarity with various meter manufacturer's software applications, such as ION Setup, MaxCom, and ComExt.
  • Advanced knowledge of electricity as applied to three-phase power and metering applications.
  • Ability to use and take accurate measurements with ammeters, volt meters, ohmmeters, and related metering equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of the hazards of this type of work and the necessary safety precautions (Lockout/Tagout).
  • Advanced knowledge of personal computers for programming electronic meters, electronic power analyzers, maintaining records and accessing utility billing information.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows Operating Systems, Excel and Word.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the clients and other employees.
  • BONUS: Degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering.
  • BONUS: CAISO Certified Inspector.

Pay Transparency

This announcement is open to Level II job levels.  The base pay range for this position is $38.00-$46.00/hour, with starting salary typically in the low to mid-range for the job level.  This is an overtime non-exempt position.  Compensation is based on market rate, job level, job related knowledge, skills, experience, education, and certifications.  This is a Full Time opportunity.
