About the Role
We are seeking a Mapping Software Engineer Co-Op to help with the map creation and localization process used to enhance robotic driving.
As part of the mapping and visualization team, you will be able to create maps that give automated vehicles awareness of their environment. You will also be presented with opportunities to develop your own software to improve our ability to efficiently create maps of new areas and to visualize map data alongside data from many other software components.
Must be willing to be based locally in Blacksburg, VA for duration of Co-Op.
The Mapping Co-op is responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining high-definition (HD) maps as needed. The co-op will support the team by managing event failure analyses and mapping requests from other teams. Additional responsibilities include developing algorithms, processes, and/or scripts to support the creation, maintenance, and analysis of HD Map data. The scope of this position includes improving existing tools or developing new tools with the objective of improving the efficiency and accuracy of maps used for self-driving operation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and maintain map data used for self-driving operation
- Perform event analysis using vehicle test data
- Manage mapping requests from other teams
- Improve processes for map creation, maintenance, and analysis
Experience, Skills, and Knowledge
- Comfortable with 3D geometry and coordinate transforms
- Experience with Python
- Ability to troubleshoot software
- Experience with Linux
- ArcGIS, SQL, QGIS, JOSM is a plus
- Experience with C++ and ROS is a plus
- Desire to learn and eagerness to help with a variety of tasks
Education, Licensing, and Certifications - Required
Candidate must be a full-time student currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field and willing to locate to the Blacksburg area.
